Busted sewer line causes sinkhole in Evans City

A busted sewer line is to blame for the sinkhole that opened up on Route 68 in Evans City near Edco Park at about 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to sewer officials.

Martin Fabian, a foreman for the Evans City Water and Sewer Authority, said his team does not know why the line collapsed. They patched the line overnight Wednesday, he said, and filled the sinkhole with stone to serve as a temporary patch.

“We’ll let it settle in more, then add some more stone and eventually cold patch it,” Fabian said.

A cold patch is a type of asphalt repair material used for such road problems.

The line was back up and functioning normally by Thanksgiving Day, he said.

Fabian didn’t believe anyone was hurt as a result of the hole, but it did cause a few flat tires.

Brett Piccola, an assistant maintenance manager for PennDOT in Butler County, confirmed that repairs were the sewer authority’s responsibility because the authority’s line was responsible for the damage.
