GC, North East all about the run game
GROVE CITY — Jeff Bell and his Grove City High football team have spent the last two weeks watching film.
The Eagles didn’t just view their first-round District 10 Class AA playoff opponent North East. They also watched themselves.
Grove City filmed practice and went over the footage with a keen eye, looking to shore up as much as it could heading into a showdown with the Grapepickers at 7 p.m. Saturday at Slippery Rock University.
“Sometimes you can’t see the little things when you are on the field,” Bell said. “We can go back and correct some things, like if someone in motion is turning up-field too soon. We can get that straightened out.”
Grove City (8-1) is coming off a bye last week. North East (7-3) closed out the regular season with a 14-6 win over Strong Vincent.
The Grapepickers have a pair of 1,000-yard runners in Corey Voorhis and Rocky Owens.
Voorhis, a sophomore, is the smaller and the quicker of the two at 5-foot-10, 165 pounds. Owens, a senior, is the bruiser at 6-1, 200.
Both can be a problem for the Eagles.
Owens has rushed for 1,394 yards and 18 touchdowns. Voorhis has 1,077 yards on the ground. North East has had at least two 1,000-yard rushers in three consecutive seasons.
Grove City, though, has its own formidable backfield.
Harold Price, Foster Reznor and Chad Williams have combined for 1,961 yards and 26 touchdowns this season.
“I’ve seen five of Grove City’s games this year, and I’ve seen them punt once,” said North East coach Matt Shesman. “They have an outstanding group of offensive players.”
Neither team likes to throw the ball very often. In fact, Shesman is starting Voorhis at quarterback Saturday against Grove City.
Voorhis has completed just 4-of-16 passes this season, but is a threat no matter where he lines up.
“Every offensive skill position known to man, Corey has played this year,” Shesman said. “We like to get him the ball in all situations.”
The Eagles aren’t going to get fancy against the Grapepickers.
“We’re actually just refining things,” Bell said. “We don’t have a real long play list. There are certain things we feel like we can do against them.”
That may include putting the ball in the air a little more.
Grove City has attempted just 58 passes this season, but quarterback Jared Graham has been efficient when he has used his arm. The sophomore has completed 62 percent of his passes for 610 yards and five TDs.
“He’s really developed into a nice quarterback,” Bell said. “He’s a kid who can make a big difference in a game like this.”
Nine games into the season, Bell is not concerned that the playoffs will be too daunting for his young QB.
“He’s seen a lot of things and a lot of looks,” Bell said. “He’s pretty confident and in a big game like Saturday night, you have to be confident.
“I know going into it North East is going to be geared up to stop the run, just like they know we are going to be geared up to stop their run,” Bell added. “You’re going to have to hit a big play in the passing game to loosen things up a little. Fortunately for us, we’ve made teams pay for putting 10 guys in the box against us this season.”
