GC football cruises past North East

Grove City No. 23 Foster Reznor finds a whole in North East's defensive line and exploits it to open up the scoring in the PIAA District 10 playoffs at Mihalik Thompson Stadium in Slippery Rock.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Grove City was clicking on all cylinders Saturday night.

The Eagles used a balanced attack to score on all eight of their possessions and cruised to a 56-14 drubbing of North East in a District 10 Class AA football quarterfinal at Slippery Rock University's Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Foster Reznor and Chad Williams found the end zone three times apiece for Grove City, while Jared Graham was 8-of-9 passing for 120 yards and three scores.

The Eagles (9-1) seized control early with a 5-yard touchdown run from Reznor, before Graham hit Reznor with a deep pass down the left sideline for a 31-yard score and a 14-0 advantage less than eight minutes into the game.

North East (7-4) responded with a 12-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a 3-yard touchdown plunge from Rocky Owens. However, the Grapepickers couldn't muster much offensively for the rest of the night.

Kyle Trinch shifted momentum back to the Eagles with a 63-yard return on the ensuing kickoff and Grove City capitalized with a 2-yard scoring scamper from Williams.

Williams tallied his second touchdown — this time on a 12-yard pass from Graham — to culminate an 11-play, 75-yard march to the end zone with 30 seconds left in the half.

“Offensively, I thought we had a great game,” said Grove City coach Jeff Bell. “We executed and we didn't stop ourselves.”

Grove City picked up where it left off to begin the second half, facing just one second down on a seven-play, 65-yard scoring drive. Graham connected with Reznor on a fade route in the corner of the end zone from 6 yards out for the sophomore's third passing touchdown in his first career playoff start.

“We couldn't be happier with the progress he's made this year and what he's meant to our football team,” said Bell of Graham. “If he keeps working, he's going to be a heck of a quarterback by the time he's done.”

Grant Craig continued a strong effort from the Eagles' special teams by blocking a punt to set up another 2-yard rushing score from Williams.

Tanner Lucido capped a dominant third quarter — in which the Grapepickers managed minus-1 yard of offense — with a 6-yard rumble into the end zone.

“We like to run the football and we have a lot of pride in our defense,” said Bell.

North East scored on a 12-yard touchdown run from Corey Voorhis in the fourth quarter against mostly Grove City backups.

“They can't let this game define their season,” said North East coach Matt Shesman. “I don't think anybody expected us to be here. I don't think anybody expected us to win seven games.

“Grove City is a great team and our hat's off to them.”

Tom Kosick finished off the Eagles' impressive performance with a 16-yard rushing touchdown.

Williams led Grove City with 81 yards rushing on 11 carries, while Reznor hauled in five catches for 89 yards. Both had over 100 yards of total offense.

Lucido, a sophomore thrust into a starting role for the first time this season, added 65 rushing yards on nine carries.

Grove City will tangle with Hickory (9-1) on Saturday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium in the District 10 Class AA semifinals. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

Note: Grove City's leading rusher Harold Price, along with Justin Fulkerson missed Saturday's game and are done for the season due to disciplinary reasons.
