A man for all positions
GROVE CITY — Ethan Conto has been a nomad this season, traveling from position to position, but never staying in the same place for very long.
The Grove City College sophomore and Karns City graduate has lined up at safety, cornerback and even inside linebacker for the Wolverines.
“It's definitely been an interesting experience,” Conto said.
And Conto has excelled no matter where Grove City College head coach Andrew DiDonato and Wolverines' defensive coordinator Mike Hoyt have chosen to line him up.
Conto is second on the team in tackles with 46. He also had an interception, a quarterback sack, has forced two fumbles and leads the Wolverines with five passes defended.
“Ethan has a special understanding of the game,” DiDonato said. “He's able to play multiple positions because of that knowledge of the game.”
Even at middle linebacker where the 5-foot-7, 175-pound Conto is far from the prototype.
He's played there against some of the more pass-happy teams in the Presidents' Athletic Conference to give the defense an added dimension in coverage.
Still, it was a bit strange for Conto to play so close to the line of scrimmage.
“It was a new experience,” Conto said. “In the two games I played there, I had a lot more action in the run game than I had at corner or safety.”
Conto handled it well.
Now, he's settled into a starting cornerback role for Grove City College.
“The biggest difference about safety and corner is at corner you are more locked into the pass and you have to be disciplined,” Conto said.
“You use your speed down the field more. At safety, you attack more. At corner, you have to stay on your guy or risk getting beat deep.”
DiDonato said he has been impressed with the seamless way Conto has moved from position to position and has excelled at each.
“Honestly, no matter where we put him, there's no drop off in his play,” DiDonato said. “That's the thing that helps you play fast and why we put him everywhere.”
Conto is hoping the fortunes of Grove City can turn around.
The Wolverines are currently mired in a 28-game losing streak heading into Saturday's road game at conference foe Bethany.
Grove City is coming off a tough 21-14 loss to Geneva.
But Conto sees the seeds of a turnaround.
“We're still working hard in practice and fighting during games,” Conto said. “We're getting to the point where I think we're going to start pulling out some of these close games.
“The thing is, we're definitely staying upbeat,” Conto added. “Coach DiDonato is always positive and enthusiastic. We have some good guys on this team.”
