Mars' Cress puts up 33 points in win

Steve Cress scored 33 points and was 17-of-21 from the free-throw line as the Mars boys basketball team dispatched Kittanning 66-57 Friday night.

Cress hit 14 of his free throws in the second half as the Planets (9-11, 4-6) rallied from a halftime deficit.

Vinny Smith added 13 points for Mars.

Slippery Rock's girls swimming team split a triangular meet recently, defeating Hickory 51-43 and losing to Grove City, 59-35.All of the Rockets relay teams turned in district-qualifying times, as did Katie Kosiorek in the 100 backstroke and Sophia Tsiris in the 100 butterfly.Other team members with season-best drops in times were Emma Knox, Sarah Downing, Hannah Parsons, Sarah Dublin, Cory Kirk and Kristen Workley.Slippery Rock's boys dropped decisions of 64-7 to Hickory and 58-30 to Grove City, but Kyle Hawk dropped the 100 backstroke school record to 1 minute, 4.05 seconds and joined Nathan Eilenfeldt, Jacob Johnston and Andrew Opalewski in reducing the school's 200 medley relay record to 1:55.14.Ken Tibbens qualified for districts in the 100 backstroke, and Caleb Sykora-Bodie qualified in the 100 freestyle. Jesse Laughner lowered his best time in the 100 breaststroke by four seconds.
