Foul line kills Raiders at NA

WEXFORD — Sometimes, a basketball team can survive a poor effort from the free throw line.

Seneca Valley's boys were not as lucky Friday night.

Making just 10 of their 28 attempts from the charity stripe, the Raiders fell to host North Allegheny, 60-59.

In the girls' contest, the Raiders lost as well in a hard-fought 41-34 decision.

The dismal shooting for SV's boys included a 6-of-23 showing at the line in the second half.

“I'm still proud of our effort,” said Raiders' coach Victor Giannotta. “A bounce here or a rebound there and we could have pulled it out.”

The Raiders (7-6, 2-3) held a late lead over their arch rivals.

Easton Bazzoli made 1-of-2 from the line to put SV up 58-57 with 1:26 left in the game.

Less than a minute later, NA's Adam Haus hit a 3-pointer for a 60-58 Tigers' edge.

SV's Austin Bream cut it to a one-point game with a free throw with 11 seconds on the clock.

Following a David Haus miss on the front end of a 1-and-1 with eight seconds remaining, Alex Snyder rebounded for the Raiders and the ball ended up in the hands of Bazzoli, whose shot from just inside the 3-point line bounced off the rim as time expired.

“I have no problem with that shot,” said Giannotta.

North Allegheny coach Dave DeGregorio will take the win, but not without concerns.

“We have to learn from this,” he said. “Seneca outplayed us tonight.”

That was most evident in the first half when the Raiders built a 37-17 lead with 1:45 to go before halftime.

But the Tigers (9-2, 4-1) used that span to go on a 12-2 run, trimming SV's lead to 39-29 at the break.

The run culminated with J.C. Howard's 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

“If we had not gone on that run, I would have been going out of my mind in the locker room,” said DeGregorio. “The run helped me calm down and go over what we needed to do better in the second half, mainly be more disciplined on defense.”

Even though the Tigers entered halftime with some momentum, Giannotta remained positive.

“You're on the road, at NA and you're up by 10 points at the half,” he said. “I'll take that. We knew NA would make a few runs.”

The Tigers' Ricky Minsterman led all scorers with 24 points.

Chad Albert and Alex Maxfield both scored 11 for the Raiders.

Both teams' offenses were stuck in neutral for much of the third quarter, but it was Seneca Valley which looked back on its lull as unforgiving.

North Allegheny rebounded enough to grab the Section 3 victory, outscoring the Raiders 17-11 in the final period.

Despite the defeat, SV coach Rob Lombardo was pleased with his team's passion on the court.

“I told the girls the minute that we got to the locker room that I have never been more proud of a team, in a win or a loss, than I was of them tonight,” he said. “The way they executed, it was great to see.”

The Raiders did force the Tigers into 24 turnovers.

“NA usually scores in the 60s, but we knew we couldn't compete with that,” added Lombardo. “We needed to keep it a low-scoring game to have a chance.”

The first points by either team in the second half came when SV's Alex Karika got a 2-pointer to fall with 2:40 left in the third quarter, giving the Raiders a 19-18 lead.

But seven turnovers in the period kept SV from taking control.

The Raiders' last lead came when Julia Vandrak scored a field goal, putting SV up 25-24 with 6:31 left in the game.

NA (10-3, 3-2) then went on an 8-1 run and was not threatened down the stretch.

Again, the Raiders (7-4, 1-4) were hurt by turnovers, committing six in the final stanza.

“Our focus in the fourth quarter was stepping up the intensity on defense,” said Tigers' coach Sherri McConnell. “We needed our defense to create offense.”

Karika led all scorers with 20 points.

NA was paced by Alexis Aiken's 11 points.
