Valley blanks Freeport, 42-0
FREEPORT — Valley was able to take advantage of an early Freeport turnover and took care of business from there as they defeated the Yellowjackets, 42-0, at Swartz Field Friday night.
Freeport held the Vikings on the opening possession of the game, forcing a punt, but the Yellowjackets fumbled their first snap from scrimmage and it was recovered by Valley junior linebacker Colten Buzzard.
“It's a tough play, but we have to learn from our mistakes and move on,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said.
The fumble set up Valley (3-1, 3-1) at the Freeport 19-yard line. The Vikings wasted little time taking advantage of the good field position as a Ty Matthews 1-yard run capped off a four-play drive. The Vikings added a two-point conversion on a nice one-handed catch by Devin Houser.
Freeport (1-3, 1-3) would go three and out on the next possession and punted to Adrian Morris, who picked up a couple of nice blocks and went untouched down the sideline 73 yards to put the Vikings up 14-0.
The first two scores of the game for Valley took only a minute and 44 seconds of game time.
The Yellowjackets went three and out again on the next possession and a 9-yard punt set up the Vikings on the Freeport 42-yard line.
The Vikings once again capitalized on getting the ball in Freeport territory as Demetrius Houser punched it in from 3 yards out in the final minute of the first quarter to make it 20-0.
After Freeport turned the ball over on downs, Valley looked poised to score again, but a delay-of-game penalty on a third down stalled the drive and Freeport took over at its own 23.
Freeport couldn't gain any momentum from the defensive stand and went three plays and out for the third time of the half. They punted to their own 43 yard line.
It took one play for the Vikings to get on the board again as Matthews found sophomore receiver Tyson Hill with a pass on the 10-yard line and he took it the rest of the way for a touchdown. Matthews hit Dylan Clarke in the end zone to complete the two-point conversion to put the Vikings up 28-0 going into halftime.
“Our goal was to be up four scores going into halftime and we were able to accomplish that tonight,” Valley coach Chad Walsh said.
Valley scored on just two plays early in the third quarter as the Housers took over. Demetrius Houser took a handoff and busted loose down the Freeport sideline for 63 yards, setting up his cousin Devin, who scored from 22 yards out on the next play.
“They are a nice complement to each other,” Walsh said. “(Demetrius) is fast and Devin is a shifty back.”
Valley scored in the fourth quarter when Matthews found Hill with a 24- yard pass, their second touchdown connection on the night.
It was a tough night offensively for Freeport as it managed only 69 yards of offense and five first downs. Steven Lassinger led the Yellowjackets with 18 yards rushing and Codey DiGiacobbe had four receptions for 37 yards.
While the game didn't go Freeport's way, Gaillot saw some positives.
“We cut down on our penalties tonight,” Gaillot said. “Our kids have heart and it was good to see them stand up for each other.
“We have a young team that's learning how to do things as we go.”
