Jacob Kildoo and Tom Bollinger grabbed first and second place, respectively, to help Grove City capture the District 10 Class AAA Boys 5K Cross Country Championship at Buhl Park Saturday.

Kildoo, a sophomore, was clocked at 16 minutes, 58 seconds while senior Bollinger was runner-up at 17:19, eight second ahead of third-place finisher Logan Steiner, a freshman, of Meadville.

With the win, Grove City will bring its entire squad to the PIAA Championship this weekend. They finished with 58 points, edging Cathedral Prep by one point. McDowell was third with 70 points.

"We knew there was one runner from Meadville and one from Cathedral Prep that could separate (Kildoo and Bollinger)," said Grove City coach Mike Sample. "We knew if we would win the district title, we had to go 1-2 and have the others follow. We got it and the rest is history."

Ryan Sestak gave the Eagles their third top-10 finisher when he placed ninth at 18:03. Alex Knaby (18th, 18:31) and Ben Hoffman (28th, 19:01) rounded out the squad's top five.

Cathedral Prep had all five of its scorers place in the top 17, but just fell short.

It was Sestak's performance that proved to be the big difference, according to Sample.

"We ran Prep earlier in the year and we, by far, were not close to them," said Sample. "They put three individuals in front of him earlier in the year. We knew we had to break up that pack.

"It was a sprint to the end to try and beat Prep's No. 2 runner. He didn't do it, but it was bang-bang. But Ryan did beat their No. 3 guy. Ryan Sestak did what he needed to do," Sample added.

Knaby and Hoffman, both freshmen, had strong races to solidify the Eagles' top five group.

In the girls' Class AAA race, Grove City's Sara Chuzie was fourth overall at 20:52 while Nicole Wizorek was seventh at 21:10 to help the Eagles finish third behind runnerup Meadville (56) and champion and state qualifier McDowell (53).

Chuzie's performance allows her to advance to the state finals while Wizorek just missed the cut.

Megan DeGraaf, the team's No. 1 runner for four years, had a disappointing race, finishing 24th overall.

"She was my No. 5 (Saturday)," said Sample. "You're going to have off days. If she ran the way she was able to, the standings would have been different.

"She had an off day and that's acceptable. It's just unfortunate it happened when it did. She's done a great job for us,"Sample added

In the Class AA boys race, Jacob Spurk was 11th (17:25) and Owen Bowser 13th (17:26) to help Slippery Rock place eighth out of 29 teams with 220 points. Northeast won the race with 74 points.

In the girls Class AA race, Jessica Bennett was 14th with a time of 20:34 to lead Slippery Rock, which placed 15 out of 28 teams. West Middlesex won the team competition with 97 points, four points ahead of Union City.

Spurk, Bowser and Bennett have all qualified for the state championship meet.
