SV battles for WPIAL win
It wasn't easy and it wasn't pretty, but the Seneca Valley girls volleyball team is moving on after a hard-fought 3-2 win over Latrobe in the quarterfinal round of the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs Tuesday night.
"We started out badly," said Seneca Valley coach Karen Martini. "We actually kept them in the game. We made way too many mistakes."
Martini said she got standout performances from senior middle hitter Meghan Franz and senior libero Maggie Gillooly.
"All of my seniors played well," Martini said.
The Raiders will square off against Pine-Richland Thursday at a site and time to be determined with a spot in the WPIAL finals on the line.
Martini said she hoped Tuesday's uneven performance would help her team in its next battle.
"We had a little more experience (than Latrobe), and I think that helped us," Martini said.
Hopewell 3, Mars 0 — The Planets fell in a WPIAL Class AA quarterfinal. No details were available.
Montour 3, Freeport 1 — The Yellowjackets bowed out of the WPIALClass AA playoffs with this defeat. No information was available.
Oswayo Valley 3, A-C Valley 1 — Despite 39 kills and 16 blocks as a team, the No. 6 seeded Falcons fell to the No. 11 seed 25-23, 25-27, 21-25, 20-25 in the District 9 Class A playoffs."I'm still trying to figure that one out," said A-C Valley coach Doug Knox.Erika Rothen had 19 kills and Karly Kaufman had 11 blocks in the loss for A-C Valley (12-4).
