Moniteau breaks through for victory

Warriors down St. Marys, 33-26

CHERRY TWP — Moniteau had knocked on the door of its first victory the past two weeks, coming up just short.

Friday night at Warrior Stadium they broke the door down.

Stephen Hagg scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns and Cody Skiver made a late interception to seal a 33-26 victory over St. Marys.

Hagg found a hole in the St. Marys defense and scored from 27 yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter to break a 20-all tie.

Hagg looked to score the go-ahead touchdown late in the third quarter, but a block in the back penalty negated the score.

St. Marys was unable to get a first down on the following possession and punted the ball into the end zone for a touchback.

After a 9-yard run by Shaffer got the Warriors to their own 29, it looked as if they would score again. Skiver took a quarterback draw down the sideline and broke a few tackles before finding the end zone. Another block in the back penalty negated the touchdown, though, and the ball was placed on the St. Marys 39.

Moniteau was not deterred by the penalty, however, and scored just two plays after the infraction when Hagg found the end zone from 12 yards out. The touchdown put the Warriors up 33-20.

“Hagg looked a little winded and I asked him if he needed to come out of the game,” Moniteau coach Cecil Blauser said. “He waved me off and said he was good to go and he proved that.”

Down two scores with just under eight minutes remaining, the Dutchmen received the ball at their own 31 and it took just two plays for them to get the game within one score.

Jordan Straub took a quick handoff that caught the Warriors off-guard and went untouched for a 61-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion failed bringing the score to 33-26 with 7:53 remaining.

The Warriors started their next drive at their own 34. They were able to take time off the clock, moving the ball down the field in seven plays to the St. Marys 29 and on a fourth-down play, Skiver was intercepted at the St Marys 9 with just over two minutes remaining.

With the game on the line, the Dutchmen faced a fourth down at their own 29 and quarterback Nick Cunningham found Brady Bauer with a pass on the sideline for 22 yards to keep their hopes alive.

Their hopes would end two plays later, though, when Skiver intercepted Cunningham at the Moniteau 15 with a minute remaining in the game.

“(Moniteau) is a good team that played a tough schedule so far,” St. Marys coach Joe Schlimm said. “We are a little bit banged up, but they were better than us tonight.”

Moniteau was able to get on the board first, scoring on the opening possession of the game when Skiver hit Trevor Shaffer with a touchdown pass from 8 yards out on a fourth-and-goal play.

The Dutchmen responded on their first possession, driving 70 yards in nine plays and scored when Cunningham found Bauer in the end zone from 3 yards out.

The Warriors got on the board again on the first play of the second quarter when Shaffer scored from 17 yards out.

The Dutchmen would score again on their next possession when Cunningham hit Nate Straub with a screen pass. He broke one tackle and ran 16 yards for the score.

Moniteau continued the pattern, scoring on their next possession when Dustin Geagan scored on a 35-yard run.

St. Marys broke the trend on the next drive and punted, but after holding penalty set the Warriors back to their own 4, the Dutchmen sacked Skiver in the end zone for a safety.

After receiving the free kick at the Moniteau 44, they drove down the field and scored in the final minute of the half when Cunningham found Straub in the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 20 apiece going into half.

While St. Marys was successful moving the ball in the first half, the Warriors shut them down in the second half allowing only 126 yards and four first downs in the final two periods.

“It was great to get this win on homecoming,” Blauser said. “It was big for our program to get a win over a quality opponent like they are.”
