CLARION — Slippery Rock University guard Kyle Camper set the single-season school record for assists as The Rock edged host Clarion University 95-90 in overtime Saturday afternoon.

Camper dished out 12 assists in the win, bringing his season total to 271, passing Brent Schrempf, who had 259 assists in the 1993-94 season.

Camper needs just two more assists to break the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference single-season mark.

Denell Stephens scored 34 points to pace The Rock, which fell behind 25-14 in the first half and was down 45-32 at halftime before its second-half rally.

Stephen, who also had 13 rebounds, hit two free throws with 47 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score at 78-78 and force overtime.

Maurice Douglas hit a 3-pointer with 1:32 remaining in overtime to break an 84-84 tie. The Rock then iced the game by going 8-for-8 at the line down the stretch.

Maron Brown added 19 points and Camper also scored 15 points.

The win, coupled with an Indiana (Pa.) University loss vaulted SRU (18-7, 9-3) into a second-place tie in the PSAC.

The Rock hosts IUP Saturday.

Amanda Nero sank a pair of free throws with 1:41 left to play as the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team downed host Clarion, 64-61, Saturday afternoon.The win kept The Rock (11-14, 6-6) in a tie for the fourth and final PSAC tournament spot.SRU led 39-20 at halftime, but had to hold off a furious Clarion rally.Clarion took a 59-57 lead with 5:16 remaining in the game, but Sasha Sales hit a pair of layups to put The Rock back on top.Clarion tied the score at 61-61, but Nero hit two free throws and Sales added another to secure the key conference win.Sales led SRU with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Nero added 15 points.Union graduate Bethany Koch paced Clarion with 19 points and 13 rebounds.The Rock can clinch a PSAC tournament spot with a road win over California (Pa.) University Wednesday. SRU closes its regular season at home againstIUP Saturday.

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Junior catcher MattAdams and senior right fielder Scott Bender each hit two-run home runs as the SlipperyRock University baseball team opened the season with an 11-6 win over Tiffin University at Veterans Administration Memorial Stadium.Adams went 2-for-4 with a homer and a double and three RBI.Bender had a three-hit day with two RBI.Sophomore right-hander Scott Dunn got the win in relief of sophomore starter George Hebert.Dunn struck out six to go with no walks in four innings of relief work.
