SV boys dominate North Hills
JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley’s offense needed a boost and Alex Snyder answered the bell.
The 6-foot-7 senior center scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the third quarter as the Raiders defeated visiting North Hills 75-56 in high school boys basketball action Tuesday night.
In all, SV (4-1, 2-0) managed 24 points in the third period, even though the team’s leading scorer, Easton Bazzoli, spent much of the quarter on the bench with three fouls.
“It was just a matter of us sharing the ball and doing all the right things offensively,” said Snyder, who made six field goals in the third quarter, helping the Raiders extend their 31-24 halftime lead to 55-40 by the end of the period.
“Alex stepped up like a senior on a mission,” said Raiders coach Victor Giannotta.
North Hills coach Buzz Gabos was less enthused about the second half.
“We knew coming in that Seneca’s size would be an issue,” he said. “They did a good job against our zone defense.”
The Raiders received field goals from six different players in the fourth quarter to dash any hopes of an Indians’ comeback.
“We didn’t execute well and started to panic,” said Gabos. “In the end, Seneca just wore us down.”
SV shot 64 percent (20-of-31) from the field in the second half and committed just five turnovers in that span.
The Indians (2-4, 0-2) jumped out to an early 13-8 lead, but 3-pointers from R.J. McCauley and Eric Woods helped give the Raiders a 16-15 advantage after eight minutes.
“North Hills came out with a lot of intensity, but we were able to knock down some shots and get back in the game,” said Giannotta.
Bazzoli finished the contest with 12 points and Zach Spangler added 10 for SV.
Danny White paced North Hills with 15 points, including a trio of baskets from beyond the arc. Dylan Mitchell scored 12 and Shawndale Jones 11.
“Joel Pepmeyer broke his hand earlier this fall and missed a lot of practice,” said Gabos of North Hills’ senior forward who scored nine points. “He’s still trying to get his legs under him. He averaged 12 points per game last year and we’re hoping he can contribute 15 this season.”
