Tigers find revenge on Tornado

BUTLER TWP — If North Allegheny was looking for payback, it cashed in.

The Tigers sank 16 of their first 20 shots — including six treys — and ran away from Butler, 93-69, in a section boys basketball game Friday night in the Golden Tornado gym.

The victory avenged three losses to Butler last year, including a defeat in the WPIAL Class AAAA quarterfinals.

“I'm sure that was on their mind coming in here tonight,” Butler coach Matt Clement said. “That's a proud program over there. They've got Hampton and New Castle coming up, but this game was probably circled on their calendar.”

Through three quarters, the Tigers hit 29 of 43 shots from the floor, including 10 3-pointers.

“The kids might speak differently, but as a coach, you have to let it go,” NA coach Dave DeGregorio said of last season. “We came in here focused, driven and ready to play. That's what I liked.

“As for our shooting, I can't say I was surprised. That's what we do. We're a good shooting team.”

The Tigers' lead peaked at 89-48 with 5:18 remaining when DeGregorio emptied his bench.

Senior guard Adam Haus scored a career-high 29 points for the Tigers, including six treys. He contributed five rebounds and four assists as well.

“He was making shots I've never seen him make before — and he's a good shooter to begin with,” Clement said. “He took control of this game right away. He was their go-to guy early.

“You have to tip your hat to NA. They played a great basketball game. They executed everything they wanted to do.”

Sean Hennigan had 15 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Tigers (10-0, 4-0). R.J. Colabrese added 12 points as North Allegheny's 93 tallies marked a season-high.

“Butler came out aggressively up high on defense and our kids were able to get past them and drive to the rim,” DeGregorio said. “When they (Tornado) sagged off, we hit our three's. It's tough when a team is doing both.”

“They were hitting shots we wanted them to take,” Clement admitted.

Seth Cook led the Tornado (4-6, 1-3) with 19 points. Nick Patten came off the bench to score eight. Luke Tincha had six of 29 Butler rebounds and did not play until the fourth quarter.

Eleven players scored for North Allegheny, off to its best start in years despite returning only two starters.

“We don't pay attention to who starts,” DeGregorio said. “We look at starter minutes and we've got a few guys who had a lot of those last year.

“Great kids who work hard, who listen and do what we tell them to do ... That's why we're off to this kind of start.

Butler suffered 22 turnovers to only eight for North Allegheny. The Tornado dropped their third straight home game and have yet to win on their own floor this season.

“We have to get quicker on defense and we had too many turnovers,” Clement said. “I'm upset with how we played and the kids are upset about it, but we have to come to practice tomorrow prepared to go down to North Hills (Tuesday) and play basketball.

“We've lost to New Castle, Hampton and North Allegheny in section, three of the top teams in the WPIAL. It is what it is. We can't dwell on that or we're going to find ourselves in a really big hole.”
