Raiders rip Southmoreland, 7-0
The Seneca Valley girls soccer team received goals from six different players en route to a 7-0 victory over Southmoreland in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA playoffs Tuesday at Chartiers Valley.
Madison Kozlowski tallied two goals for the Raiders while Morgan Williams, Katie Riley, Shayna Elser, Sarah Stevens and Mandy Kasperski added one apiece for the WPIAL champions.
The shutout was the Raiders' ninth of the season.
Seneca Valley won the WPIAL championship in 2007, but it followed up with a first-round PIAA loss.
"We learned from that a couple of years ago," said Raiders coach Dave Sylvester. "We were still kind of celebrating that (WPIAL title) win.
"We hadn't had a lot of time to talk since (Saturday). It's just been a couple of days, but when we scored three minutes into the game, it kind of set the tone," Sylvester added.
Seneca Valley (22-0-1) advances to Saturday's quarterfinal round, where it will face Norwin (17-4-1), a 7-0 victor over Schenley.
"Getting the (first-round) win, the excitement is there of getting back in," said Sylvester. "We'll have out hands full with Norwin, that's for sure."
In Class AAA first-round action, WPIAL runner-up Seneca Valley swept Altoona 25-17, 25-17, 25-14 at Central Cambria High.In Class AA, Freeport, also a WPIAL finalist, defeated Punxsutawney 25-10, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18 at DuBois High.Mars, the No. 4 seed from the WPIAL, defeated District 10 champion Wilmington 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-12.Camblin Leonard had 21 kills, Camille Plesniak had 19 and Maddie Hudak had 51 assists.With the wins, all three teams advance to Central York High, which will host the PIAA quarterfinals and semifinals Friday and the championship match on Saturday
