SRU drops pair at Indiana
INDIANA — Slippery Rock University ended its respective basketball seasons Saturday with lopsided losses at PSAC West rival Indiana.
Maron Brown scored a career-high 29 points and added 12 rebounds — posting his 14th double-double of the season — in The Rock men's 99-71 defeat.
The junior center fell one double-double short of tying Denell Stephens' single-season record of 15, set last year.
SRU's women placed no one in double figures and shot just 28 percent from the floor in suffering an 83-44 loss at IUP. The defeat left Rock coach Laurel Heilman a win shy of tying the program's all-time career victory record.
Brown scored 19 of SRU's first 26 points in the second half of the men's game. Senior guard Maurice Douglas added 15 points for The Rock.
After a school-record 10-0 start this season, SRU (15-12, 4-10) lost 12 of its final 17 games.
Indiana (25-2, 13-1) is ranked No. 6 nationally and completed a 14-0 record at home. Akida McLain paced the Crimson Hawks with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Thomas Young added 24 points.
Saturday's game marked the final collegiate contest for Rock seniors Douglas, Cecil Brown, Michael Evans Jr., Gary Satterwhite, Bryen Spriggs and Butler graduate Jade Burka.
Grove City High graduate Julie Molloy paced The Rock women (6-21, 3-11) with eight points and seven rebounds. Nikki Presto and Bethany Caudill scored seven points each.
Eryn Withers scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds for IUP (17-9, 10-4) while Sarah Pastorek added 18 points.
Shippensburg edged Slippery Rock University 173.25-154.5 to capture the PSAC Indoor title Sunday at Edinboro University, outdistancing third-place East Stroudsburg (80), Indiana (68) and Kutztown (64) to round out the top five.Tiffany Tedesco won the 60-meter dash (7.76) and 200 (a school-record and provisional qualifying time of 25.02) and was a member of the winning 1,600 relay along with Allison Smith, Amanda Seigworth and Kaela Synder (3:54.87).Smith and Seigworth placed second and third, respectively, in the 60 hurdles while Kim Stitt was second in the triple jump and third in the pentathlon on Saturday and fourth in the shot put Sunday.Whitney Hendershot placed second in the high jump, Rachel Weber second in the shot put and Jen Harpp was third in the 3,000 to highlight The Rock.The Rock men placed sixth in the PSAC championships, led by Phil Rector, who won the 800 with a time of 1:55.25.Rector also was a part of SRU's school-record setting 3,200 relay from Saturday. He was joined by Kevin Jewel, Jason Jamieson and Dan Henry (7:48.8).Brady Wert placed second in the heptathlon, finishing with a school-record 5,016 points.
