Butler girls learn lesson in OT loss

PENN HILLS — Alyssa DiPippa wasn't sure she could keep her hands to herself.

Playing with four fouls in overtime against Penn Hills, the 5-foot-6 Butler junior point guard knew she had to stay on the floor.

DiPippa restrained herself and helped the Golden Tornado stay close, but the Lady Indians pulled away for a 55-49 win Friday night at the Penn Hills Tournament.

Butler (0-1) will play Kiski in the consolation game Saturday.

“It's rough when you have four fouls,” said DiPippa, who scored all five of Butler's points in overtime. “Mainly on defense it takes away the intensity I'd like to be playing at. When I got taken out of the game it hurts.”

In the second half, DiPippa and Kalynn Callihan had to make Penn Hills' defense hurt.

The Lady Indians (1-0) weren't going to let Butler forward Julia Baxter beat them.

Baxter, who finished with a double-double, scoring a game-high 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds before fouling out in overtime, dominated the first half.

DiPippa finished with 12 points and three assists, while Callihan scored 15 points.

“We knew we had to hit some outside shots so they'd bring out their defense and look into Baxter more,” DiPippa said.

Butler only had two other players combine to score three points.

With DiPippa on the bench with foul trouble, the Golden Tornado struggled to bring the ball up the floor.

“I knew that was going to happen and I've been preaching about that because some of the other girls aren't offensively minded,” Butler coach Dorothea Epps said. “I was explaining to them they were going to double down on (Baxter) if they weren't going to think about shooting the ball. On the kicks out, they have to be ready to shoot the ball and can't be afraid to make a play.”

Baxter only scored five points after halftime, but made the key play to send the game into overtime. With the Golden Tornado trailing 44-42 with 1.6 seconds remaining, Butler faked the inbound pass to Callihan.

The pass went to Baxter, who was fouled behind the 3-point line.

She made the first two free throws to tie the game. In overtime, Jade Ely, who finished with 17 points, put the game away for Penn Hills.

She attacked the rim a minute in, drawing Baxter's fifth foul and putting the Lady Indians ahead 47-44.

Penn Hills coach John Tate, who was upset with the foul call at the end of regulation, was pleased with how his team refocused.

“Just understand we still had an opportunity to win the basketball game,” Tate said. “There were some hurt feelings and things when it goes into overtime. Get your emotions in check, you can still win the basketball game.”

Penn Hills pushed the lead to 51-44 before DiPippa responded.

She scored four quick points on a free throw and 3-pointer to cut the lead to 52-49 with 38.6 seconds remaining.

Penn Hills made its free throws to close out the win. Butler led 23-20 at halftime, before the Lady Indians turned up the pressure and took a 36-35 lead into the fourth quarter.

“We're trying to get them ready for section play and I think a game like this will help them with their confidence,” Epps said.
