Martin keys SRU victory
SLIPPERY ROCK — Josh Martin saved the Slippery Rock men’s basketball team from a second straight loss Wednesday night at Morrow Field House.
Martin converted a three-point play with 3.9 seconds remaining to help the Rock beat West Chester 62-60.
SRU lost to No. 12 East Stroudsburg 76-64 Monday night.
The Rams’ Rasheed Wilkins missed a game-winning shot attempt at the buzzer. It was a wild final minute as the Rock (9-3) went ahead 59-58 with 27.1 seconds left when Antonio Butler, who finished with 13 points, scored on an offensive rebound.
West Chester (6-4) took the lead back on a layup by Shannon Givens with 12.5 seconds remaining, setting up Martin’s heroics.
Martin finished with 18 points and five rebounds for the Rock. Maurice Lewis-Briggs had a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
West Chester led 31-30 at halftime and limited SRU to 26.7 percent (16 of 60) shooting from the field.
Women’s Basketball
West Chester 84, Slippery Rock 71 — The Rock (1-9) kept it close, but dropped its fourth straight game.
The Rams (7-3) used a 9-0 run in the second half to gain control after leading 37-32 at halftime. D’Asia Chambers led SRU with a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Jazmyne Frost (19 points), Erica Aiello (14) and Aidan Geise (13) all finished in double figures for the Rock.
