Swartwout paces Butler win in California

The sun and beaches of Southern California already have been kind to the Butler boys basketball team.

Bobby Swartwout scored 18 points and had eight rebounds as the Golden Tornado pulled away from Vacaville (Calif.) 54-37 at the Surf and Slam Tournament in San Diego Monday afternoon.

Butler (3-3) trailed Vacaville, a school located near Sacramento, 14-12 after the first quarter, but a 17-4 run, keyed by eight points by Swartwout, gave the Tornado a 29-18 lead at halftime.

Swartwout scored eight more points in the third quarter to keep Vacaville at bay.

Nate Snodgrass had 13 points and four assists for Butler, and Cody West entered the game in the second quarter and provided a defensive spark.

Butler shot 50 percent from the field and hit all 14 of its free throws in the victory.

The Tornado outrebounded Vacaville by a 2-to-1 margin.

Butler will play Mission Bay (Calif.) at 6:15 p.m. today.
