GC's Phipps earns mat title

Grove City junior wrestler Wes Phipps won his second straight District 10 Class AA title Saturday, pinning Greenville's Tyler Landfried just 66 seconds into the 171-pound championship bout at Sharon High School.

“I faced (Landfried) earlier this season in a dual meet and beat him 15-4,” said Phipps, whose title last season came at 160 pounds. “I was expecting a three-period match (Saturday), but I caught him trying to throw me. It's a move he likes to use, but I stayed in control.”

Phipps is a perfect 23-0 on the season and will next wrestle at the Northwest Regionals, beginning Friday at Sharon High.

Teammates who will be joining him after placing in the top six in District 10 include Jesse Rivera (fourth at 119 pounds), Trey Maher (fifth, 135) and Chet Simoni (sixth, 140).

Butler senior Meredith Harbison qualified for next month's PIAA Class AAA Girls Championship by placing third at Saturday's WPIAL finals at Pine-Richland High School.Harbison managed a score of 403.35.Seneca Valley's Jenn Suder placed sixth with a 369.

Butler's Autumn Hepler placed second at the Western Regional, Brea Suchonic third and Nicole Balk 11th. All three advance to next month's state championship.Hepler advanced to the regional title match before losing to Hempfield's Justyne Falbo, 265-198.Butler's Hepler, Suchonic, Balk, Heather Paul, Kelly Bintrim, Brittney Buzard and Alisha Fisher placed third as a team and will compete as such at states.Headed to the state event on the boys' side is Knoch's Kevin Hindman, who placed second at Regionals.

Greensburg Central Catholic's Jesse Reed scored a basket with three seconds left to give the Centurions a 64-62 win over Summit Academy in a WPIAL Class AA quarterfinal playoff at Norwin High.The Knights (16-9) received 19 points from David Murray, 14 from Arley Townsend and Ron Smith and 12 courtesy of Dale Johnson.No other details were available.
