Moniteau needs 3rd win over RV
CHERRY TWP — There's really no thoughts about a possible third matchup with Karns City in the Class AA District 9 playoffs for Moniteau girls basketball coach Matt Stebbins.
First, the fourth-seeded Warriors (14-8) will need to figure out how to beat Redbank Valley (14-8) for the third time first.
Moniteau beat the Bulldogs 45-38 Dec. 12 at Redbank Valley and 54-42 Feb. 13 at home.
“We to take care of business first,”Stebbins said. “It's good we have Redbank Valley fresh on our minds. I'm not looking ahead to the second round, no matter who it's going to be.”
The District 9 playoffs will tip off Wednesday and Thursday nights at venues to be determined. All games will be played at neutral sites.
Karns City, which is 21-1 and won its first Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference title since 2003-04 last Friday, is the top seed. The Gremlins will face eighth-seeded Brookville, which they beat 67-23 Dec. 12.
Curwensville (15-7) was awarded the second seed and Clarion-Limestone (14-8) third.
For the Class AA boys, Karns City (14-7) was given the No. 2 seed and will play seventh-seeded Kane (7-15) in the second round.
“We don't know a whole lot about them. I'm actually watching film on them right now,” Gremlins coach Chris Bellis said. “They play a lot of zone defense and have balanced scoring. They don't have a stand-out scorer and they are about the same size as us. We match up well with them.”
Redbank Valley, which finished tied for the KSAC South title with the Gremlins, is the top seed.
The Bulldogs (16-7) split the season series with Karns City and will have a first-round bye.
For Class A boys, No. 10 seed Union (11-11) will open with seventh-seeded Dubois Central Catholic Tuesday night.
