SV stuns unbeaten Hempfield

The Seneca Valley softball team is alive and well.

The same can't be said for Hempfield.

SV plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning in a 4-2 win over the Spartans in a WPIAL Class AAAA quarterfinal playoff at Woodland Hills High School Monday afternoon.

Hempfield (17-1) entered the game undefeated.

“Beating a team like Hempfield is a big step for us,” said Raiders' coach George Trew. “That's a very good team.”

With the score knotted at 2, the Raiders scored the eventual winning run when Kelsey Mislan came home on a Spartan throwing error in the top of the seventh inning.

Sarah Blagg singled home Alyssa DiMaria for insurance later in the inning.

Emily Watson then stranded three base runners in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

Watson struck out four and walked five while giving up the two runs on six hits.

“Hempfield also had the bases loaded with one out in the third inning and Emily worked out of that jam, too,” said Trew. “She pitched well.”

Taking the loss for Hempfield was Hope Pehrson, who struck out three and walked two in a complete game.

The Raiders (12-5) are now in the WPIAL's final four. They will face Baldwin, an 8-5 winner over Peters Township, in the semifinals at a site, time and date to be determined.

“At the start of the season, I was hoping for a deep playoff run,” said Trew. “We have five seniors on this year's team. We're more mature than the last couple of years.”
