Cranberry resident tabbed for top honor

CRANBERRY TWP — Brenna Wise sat on the couch March 23, disappointed it was all over.

The Vincentian Academy junior helped the Royals beat Old Forge 58-34 to win the Class A title a day before.

Then she realized it didn’t have to be over.

“My dad and I went to the gym together,” Wise said. “We went to where I play AAU basketball, right behind the Beaver County Auto Mall.”

That dedication, along with the 6-foot-1 foward’s production, garnered her the Class A girls basketball Associated Press Player of the Year, which was released Friday afternoon.

Wise averaged 19.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 2.4 assists per game for Vincentian last season.

She’s even more excited for next year.

“Absolutely, I’m very greedy. I want to win another one,” Wise said. “I want to continue to improve on my game. I need to get back in the gym and win another state title.”

Karns City sophomore forward LeeAnn Gibson was the only other local player to garner all-state honors. Gibson was chosen for third team in Class A.

Gibson, who averaged a team-high 16.4 points per game, helped lead Karns City to its first District 9 title since 2004 and the second round of the state playoffs.

“It was a great accomplishment for a girl who really, really works hard,” Gremlins coach Dave Kerschbaumer said. “I think she’s a girl who refuses to lose and doesn’t like to come in second place on anything.

“She battles every night and on every possession. She hung in there and did everything she needed to do win.”
