Freeport cruises, 67-6
Damon Smith rushed for 209 yards and four touchdowns Friday night as Freeport ran away from West Shamokin, 67-6, in football action at Swartz Field.
Smith scored on runs of 70, 3, 13 and 29 yards.
Sean Carson returned fumbles 21 and 17 yards for TDs for the Yellowjackets (6-2, 5-1) while Dustin Koedel returned a kickoff 55 yards for a score.
West Shamokin (0-8, 0-6) averted the shutout when Andrew Sabula scored on a 27-yard run in the final quarter.
Freeport had a 61-0 lead at halftime.
Union 25, St. Marys 7 — Union continued its march toward the school's first-ever football playoff berth Friday night with a 25-7 victory over St. Marys in Rimersburg.Taylor Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for another for the Golden Knights (5-3), who have won five games in a season for the first time since 1997.Brody Pollock was on the receiving end of both Smith touchdowns. A Kaden McGregor interception and subsequent 33-yard return set up Smith's rushing score.Austin Davis paced Union with 22 carries for 133 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Smith threw for 112 yards and rushed for 57.
Karns City 56, Clarion-Limestone 14 — Karns City totaled 512 yards of offense to just 206 for the Lions (1-7), as the Gremlins improved to 5-3 overall with this win in Strattanville.“The field was very muddy,” said KC coach Ed Conto. “I am surprised we put up those numbers on a field in that condition.”Brady Ellenberger ran for one score and hit Alex Kinkela for another to put KC up 14-0 early in the second quarter.Later in the first half, Tyler Kepple passed 10 yards to Brandon Krumpe, then hit J.J. Hutchison for a two-point conversion pass.Hutchison (2, 39), Glenn Toy (62) and Wyatt Everetts (2) each had scoring runs in the second half, with Everetts adding a 75-yard kickoff return for KC's final score.The Gremlins host Saint Marys (5-3) next Friday.
Shady Side Academy 43, Summit Academy 20 — The Knights (3-5, 3-3) were trailing 21-20 and driving for the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter when they lost a fumble. Shady Side drove the other way for a touchdown and added two more scores late.Summit Academy lost three fumbles on the night. Sean McCausland rushed for 89 yards and threw a 34-yard TD pass to David Carter. Chris Highsmith and Raymont Bentley scored rushing touchdowns for the Knights.Reggie Mitchell rushed for 184 yards and four touchdowns, Dennis Briggs 127 yards and two scores for Shady Side.
<B>Jefferson County 3, First Baptist Christian 2 (girls volleyball) — </B>Raquel Marti had 16 serves and Lauren Hughes three aces in this semifinal playoff loss. Hildi Burleigh added 18 assists, Noelle Garrison 10 kills and Heather Johnson four blocks.
