Gremlins rally

Karns City nets goal in final minute, wins shootout to preserve title hopes

Just 10 minutes into the match, the Karns City boys soccer team was down 2-0 to defending District 9 Class A champion Northern Potter.

“I was like, ‘Oh, man,'” said Karns City coach Roy Parker.

But the Gremlins regrouped, rallying in the second half to force overtime in the final minute and got the win in a shootout to oust Northern Potter in the first round of the D-9 Class A playoffs at DuBois late Monday night.

Justin Ryan got the Gremlins going with a goal in the second half to cut the lead to 2-1, then Evan McGarvey tied the score with a dramatic goal with just 30 seconds remaining in regulation.

Karns City keeper David Olszak stopped two shots in the shootout and Eric Easley scored on the game-winning penalty kick to send the Gremlins to the district finals.

“The big thing is the guys know they can come back, that they are never out of it,” Parker said.

Karns City will play Brockway Thursday for the title at a site and time to be determined.

Grove City 2, Hickory 0 — Matt Welker and Tom Hummel each scored goals for the Eagles in a first round, District 10 Class AA playoff win.The Eagles will play General McLane at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Franklin High School in the semifinals.The Slippery Rock boys team will play Warren at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Franklin.

Girls SoccerDanielle Wissinger scored the 98th goal of her career and Ali Lotz also found the net, but the Slippery Rock High girls soccer team fell to Harbor Creek 4-2 in the first round of the District 10 Class AA playoffs Monday afternoon.Harbor Creek (17-2-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half.Kristin Markiewicz scored three goals for Harbor Creek.The Rockets closed the season with a 14-4-1 record.

HockeyTanner Gilliland accounted for Butler's lone goal off an assist by Troy Double in an 8-1 PIHL Class AAA loss to Peters Township Monday.The Indians had goals from eight different players and managed 34 shots on goal against the Tornado.

Freeport 11, Knoch 2 — The Yellowjackets cruised to the Class A win against the Knights.Further details were unavailable.
