Butler splits twinbill
Butler's boys basketball team split its two games Friday morning in the KSA Holiday Tournament played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida.
The Golden Tornado (6-4) defeated West Port of Ocala, Fla., 62-57, as David Tompkins scored 17 points, Nate Snodgrass and Cody West 11 each.
Butler then dropped a 60-58 decision to Freedom of Orlando, Fla., immediately afterward. Snodgrass scored 23 points and West 17 in a losing cause.
Snodgrass hit a 3-pointer while being fouled with 4.4 seconds remaining to pull Butler within two points. He intentionally missed the free throw, but the Tornado couldn't get the ball.
Snodgrass was named MVP of Butler's eight-team bracket. He scored 85 points in the tourney and now has 811 for his career, good for 10th place on Butler's all-time scoring list.
The Tornado return home to host Pine-Richland Tuesday night.
Tricia Kerlin and Emily Quaill each scored eight points and A-C Valley pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 30-18 win over Conneaut Valley in the championship game of the Commodore Perry Tournament.Kelsey Boocks was named the tournament MVP for the Falcons (4-3). Mars finished 4-3 in the Wheeling Park Duals this week, winning all four of its matches on the second day of the tournament.The Planets defeated Morgantown 42-33, Clinton Massie 39-36, Bellaire 66-17 and Buckeye Local 43-23. Richie Boeh, Mars' 113-pounder, went 6-0 during the two-day competition.
