Raiders golfers beat Butler, make playoffs

When Seneca Valley's golf team needed to come up big, it came up huge.

All five Raiders produced scores below 40 Tuesday in a 187-204 triumph over Butler at Cranberry Highlands. The win sends Seneca Valley to the WPIALplayoffs.

"We knew coming into this match that if we won, we were in, and if we lost, we were out,"Raiders coach Steve Mayes said. "I can't say enough about the kids' performance."

Kirk Pappas carded a 1-under-par 34 to lead Seneca Valley (10-4). Andrew Shakely had a 37 for Butler (10-4), which also qualified for the postseason.

District 10 Championships — Grove City's Cameron Peterson shot a 2-under par 70 and Derek Forese managed a 72 to finish second and third, respectively, at the District 10 Championships at Grove City Country Club.Peterson and Forese both advance to the PIAA Western Finals, to be held Monday in Blairsville.Steve Deyarmin shot an 80 for the Eagles on Tuesday, while Zach Nesbit managed an 81.

Lauren and Marisa Glew of Mars both advanced to the field of 16 Tuesday during the first round of the WPIALGirls Golf Championships at the Pittsburgh Field Club.Lauren Glew shot an 80 to tie for fourth place while Marisa shot an 83 to tie for seventh.The top 16 players advance to the PIAA Western Finals, scheduled for Monday at Tom's Run Golf Course in Blairsville.

Nick Perri and Drew Glavin each scored goals as Mars (15-0, 12-0) stayed undefeated with a 2-1 Section 2-AA win over Knoch.With the victory, the Planets secured at least a share of the section title with two games remaining.</B>Butler 3, North Allegheny 0 — Scoring goals for the Golden Tornado (13-1-1) were Ryan Armahizer, Jake Huey and Jake Gamble.Tim Duffy recorded the shutout against the Tigers.

<B>Grove City 1, Conneaut Valley 0 — </B>Christy Allison accounted for the game's lone score and Ashlee Shoop earned the shutout in net for the Eagles (5-8).The Grove City junior varsity team also won 6-0.<B>New Wilmington 3, Slippery Rock 2 — </B>Jence Rhoads had a goal and assist for the Rockets (14-1), who lost their first game. Elissa McCune added a goal.Slippery Rock plays at Titusville next Tuesday.

<B>Knoch 3, Oakland Catholic 0 — </B>Kirsten Brant had 10 kills, 17 service points and 16 assists, and Leanne Wiefling had 10 service points, six kills and 14 assists to lead the Knights to a 25-14, 25-8, 25-16 victory.Zoe Hughes added 11 kills and Sara Montgomery seven kills for Knoch (12-1, 8-1).<B>Seneca Valley 3, North Hills 0 — </B>The Raiders won this section match by scores of 25-10, 25-18 and 25-9.Jen Boyd and Meghan Franz each had eight kills to lead the Raiders (6-3 in section), Justine Carrow contributed seven kills and two blocks, and Lauren Balmert ended with 35 assists.<B>Mars 3, Ambridge 0 — </B>Alyssa Skoff sparked the Planets (11-4, 10-1) with 27 assists, Brittany Morgan had 25 kills, Lily Grenci and Kelsey Rovnan each had 11 kills and Casey Klukaszewski totaled 16 digs.<B>Butler 3, Hampton 0 — </B>Becky Smith had eight kills and two blocks in the Golden Tornado's 25-7, 25-11, 25-18 victory. Ashley Grenet added seven kills and Sam Harris had three kills, six digs and three blocks for Butler (6-5, 5-5), which hosts Fox Chapel Thursday.<B>Slippery Rock 3, Sharon 0 — </B>Jess Spiker had 10 kills for the Rockets (7-2) in their 25-17, 25-7, 25-8 victory. Kristen Staugh contributed six points, 14 assists and eight digs, Cursty McClure had seven points and six digs, Rachel Szymoniak had 10 points and Saxon Angerett had 13 points.Slippery Rock plays at Greenville Thursday.

Ben Porter placed second overall with a time of 17 minutes, 1 second to help the Butler boys cross country team (6-2) down Shaler 17-44, but fall to North Allegheny 22-37.The Butler girls squad (4-4) also defeated the Titans 26-32, but lost to the Tigers 17-44.<B>Boys Top 10:</B> M.
