A motorized bicyclist is accused of being more than three times the state's legal limit for alcohol Sunday night when he tried to elude Butler police after a rear-end crash.

But William R. Dingel III, 24, of East Butler didn't get far, police said, before he was arrested for driving under the influence.

It was his fourth arrest for DUI in three years, court records showed.

Police said they were called about 8:30 p.m. for a wreck at North Monroe and Howard streets, where the defendant struck the back of a van. Both drivers were reportedly in an altercation.

But when an officer got there, he saw Dingel, who was dressed all in black and had a helmet on, flee the scene on a “motorized pedal cycle,” according to court documents.

The officer started chasing the motor bike, which had no lighting on it, police said. The suspect jumped off the bike on the 200 block of Cecelia Avenue.

The pursuing officer got out of his cruiser and searched for the defendant. Not long afterward, documents said, Dingel was spotted coming off a porch. He got back onto his bike and took off south on Cecelia Avenue.

This time, the pursuit ended with the defendant being caught on the grounds of Butler Catholic School.

Police said Dingel reeked of alcohol and he was unable to stand on his own. A breath test subsequently showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.267 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.

In the complaint, police noted this was his fourth DUI. His prior convictions, records showed, were for two arrests in 2015 and one in 2016, both in Butler County.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Dingel on charges of DUI, fleeing or attempting to elude police, resisting arrest, hit-and-run, driving with a suspended license-DUI related and reckless driving.
