Butler VFW Post 249 reaches a milestone this week that only 30 posts out of 6,200 worldwide have achieved.

The post at 429 W. Jefferson St. on Wednesday will mark 100 years of serving the needs of local veterans and their families.

The National Headquarters is marking the occasion by giving Post 249 the VFW Centennial Anniversary Award in recognition of a VFW post's 100 years of outstanding service to their community.

There are approximately 30 active VFW posts that have reached their centennial anniversary through the year 2018, with an additional 46 posts celebrating their centennial in 2019. In 2020, there will be 86 posts celebrating a centennial anniversary. There are nearly 6,200 VFW posts worldwide.

The Butler County Historical Society's latest calendar, “Industries of Butler,” contains images from Armco, Pullman Standard Plant and Armstrong Group of Companies, among others.This full-size, 12-month wall calendar is available at Cummings Candy and Coffee, May's Music Shoppe, Natili's North, and the Senator Walter Lowrie House. CRANBERRY TWP — Discover the strange but true history of witchcraft in Pennsylvania at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Cranberry Public Library, 2525 Rochester Road.Since William Penn presided over the state's only official witch trial in 1684, witchcraft and folk magic have been a part of the history of the Keystone state.Lecturer Thomas White is the university archivist and curator of special collections at Duquesne University. The Salvation Army is accepting applications for its 2019 Treasures for Children program, which provides Christmas toys to children in need across Western Pennsylvania.Families interested in Christmas assistance must meet minimum poverty guidelines and have children who range in age from birth to 13.Christmas Assistance sign-up will take place at 29 locations throughout Western PA.
