Raiders' win streak reaches 8 games

Seneca Valley's Jack Cook drives past North Catholic's Isiah Harvin in the Raiders' 62-51 win at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School.

CRANBERRY TWP — Seneca Valley senior forward Zach Snyder wants to wait a week before discussing where the Raiders boys basketball team are as a team.

Snyder scored a game-high 25 points Saturday afternoon, helping Seneca Valley win its eighth straight with a 64-53 decision over Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic at the Don Graham Classic.

But there are bigger games on Snyder's mind.

The win over the Trojans was the final non-section tune-up before a brutal week of Section 3-AAAA games.

Seneca Valley (10-1) will host Pine-Richland Tuesday before traveling to undefeated North Allegheny Friday.

“We haven't played the big section guys yet,” Snyder said. “The real test is coming up this week with Pine, North Allegheny and Butler. We're going to play hard like we always do and live with the results.”

Raiders coach Victor Giannotta is also focused on the future.

He wants his team to have a short-term memory about the winning streak.

“It was a good team win,” Giannotta said. “We need to work hard in practice and move forward with 2015. Section games take on a meaning of their own.”

Foul trouble had the Raiders off to a slow start against the Trojans (4-6).

Seneca Valley shot 5-of-15 in the first quarter and was whistled for seven fouls as North Catholic built an 18-15 lead.

Dakota Topf, who finished with 15 points, put Seneca Valley ahead for good on a 3-pointer with 3:52 left before halftime.

It kick-started a 13-0 run that didn't stop until Trojans forward Vince LeGrande, who finished with 15 points, made a jumper with 6:45 left in the third quarter.

Seneca Valley, which led 34-24 at halftime, picked up and the pace and aggression to turn the game around.

“We had to get up-tempo again. We were playing slow,” Snyder said. “We were playing to the style they wanted. By the second quarter, we started picking it up and that made the defense get picked up, too.”

The Raiders stretched their lead to a game-high 18 points, 48-30, when Topf made a 3-pointer with around 3 minutes left in the third quarter.

Having Topf making shots opened things up for Snyder, who scored 19 points after halftime.

“In fairness to our defenders, they give you a lot to worry about with the dribble penetration and their ability to knock shots down,” North Catholic coach Dave Long said. “We get caught up with guard play and the next thing you know Snyder is slapping you around.”

Tom Braun also finished in double figures for the Trojans, scoring 13 points.
