Sam Zurzolo given "Community Champion" award
A congressman awarded Sam Zurzolo a “Community Champion” award Wednesday morning for his long-standing service in both the military and Butler County community projects.
Zurzolo is the latest recipient of U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly's, R-16th, award. Kelly has handed out the honor four times per year to members of his congressional district since 2015. Zurzolo thought he was attending a veterans event and said he was surprised to learn that Wednesday's gathering was in his name.
“I'm astonished,” said Zurzolo, who is vice president of the Butler Township board of commissioners. “It's a big shock to me.”
Zurzolo is a lifelong Butler County resident with 30 years of U.S. Marine Corps service under his belt.
The award ceremony took place at the American Legion Post 778 building in Lyndora. Many officials attended, including Butler Township commissioners, police administrators, Butler County commissioners, Veterans Affairs officials, members of Kelly's staff and state representatives.
