All about winning

Seneca Valley graduate and West Virginia University senior hockey player Sam Jarrett, right, has helped the Mountaineers reach the ACHA Div. 1 national tournament for the second time in three years.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Sam Jarrett and Ryan Schutte are all about winning.

The duo played on a pair of Penguins Cup Class AAA finalist teams with Seneca Valley. Now they’re headed for the second ACHA National Championships as seniors at West Virginia University.

“It was nice having a buddy come down here with me freshman year,” Jarrett said. “There were 100-plus kids trying out for the hockey teams here.

“Between high school and college, we’ve been through a lot together. We’re roommates here as well.”

WVU has a Div. 1 and Div. 2 team competing in the American College Hockey Association (ACHA). Jarrett and Schutte play for the Div. 1 squad.

Jarrett, a right wing on the Mountaineers’ second line, scored 15 goals and added 12 assists in the regular season. He tallied two goals and two assists —including the game-winning goal in overtime — as WVU nipped Pitt, 4-3, in the College Hockey Mid-America Conference Tournament championship game Sunday in Cleveland.

Schutte is the third-string goalie and sports a 2-0 record in five games with a 1.82 goals against average and a .930 save percentage.

“We have two very strong goalies in front of him or Ryan would be playing a lot more,” said Terry Jarrett, Sam’s father and president and general manager of Mountaineer Hockey, Inc. “Ryan could start for a lot of teams in this league.”

Schutte admits his status with the team “is frustrating at times,” but he makes the most of it.

“All of us get along and I stay ready when called upon,” he said. “We practice three times a week, so I stay sharp that way.”

West Virginia won the CHMA regular season and tournament titles despite compiling a 17-16-3 regular season record. The team went 10-3-1 in league play during the regular season.

“We play the toughest non-league schedule in the country, a bunch of top-20 ranked teams,” Terry Jarrett said.

They will play one of those — 13th-ranked Navy — in the first round of the ACHA Nationals at 11 a.m. March 6 in Delaware. The Mountaineers dropped a 5-4 decision to the Midshipmen at a College Showcase Tournament this season.

When WVU last went to nationals (2012), it reached the second round before losing to top-ranked Penn State, 3-1. Sam Jarrett’s older brother, Matt, played on that team.

“I wasn’t going to come to West Virginia at first,” Sam admitted. “Matt was already there and I wanted to create my own path.

“But when I visited down there, met the team, saw the campus ... it was the right place for me.”

Both of Jarrett’s parents, Terry and Martha, are WVU graduates. Matt Jarrett is now a chemical engineer for Consol Energy and Sam will graduate as an accounting major in May. He has accepted a position with Price Waterhouse Cooper in Pittsburgh.

Schutte will graduate in May with a business management degree.

Schutte and Jarrett plan to get into hockey coaching down the road. Both have younger brothers — Spencer Schutte and Ben Jarrett — playing for Seneca Valley this year.

Schutte’s older brother, Rich, played ACHA Div. 2 hockey for WVU.

“I’ll still play in recreational leagues, but I would love to coach high school hockey,” Schutte said. “I’ll be looking into that.”

Jarrett said he’ll focus on his business career for the next couple of years.

“I see coaching hockey in my future for sure,” he said. “Hockey has always been a big part of my life and I consider it the greatest sport on earth.

“Through all levels of hockey, I’ve built incredible relationships. The competitiveness and physicality combined with technical skills on skates make this such a unique game.

“It’s 20 guys in the same room, on the bench, all performing the same skills as a unit to win. If I can help set up kids to experience what I’ve experienced ... yes, I definitely want to do that,” Jarrett added.
