Grenninger leads Gremlins to 5-0 playoff win

KARNS CITY - Brittni Grenninger loves to see her teammates score, sometimes to a fault.

The Karns City forward passed on a few opportunities to score during Tuesday's District 9 Class AA semifinal girls soccer game against Redbank Valley.

"I had to get her to stick it in the first half," said Gremlins coach Joe Meshanko. "I told her, 'It ain't over yet. You can try and score.'"

Grenninger took her coach's advice as she registered two first-half goals and finished the game with three scores and two assists as Karns City went on to post a 5-0 victory over the Bulldogs.

The win sends the Gremlins into the championship game Thursday as part of a boys-girls doubleheader. The girls will face Brookville in the finals while the Karns City boys will face DuBois Central Catholic.

The games are tentatively set for 5 and 7 p.m., respectively, at Brockway. If the field is unplayable, the games will be at 6 and 8 p.m. at Clarion University.

Julieanne Scott accounted for the Gremlins' (18-4) other two goals.

Grenninger opened the scoring just 5 minutes, 9 seconds into the game after calming the ball between two defenders before firing a shot past Redbank goalie Amber Toth.

Scott doubled the lead after she took a Grenninger pass and scored with 28:12 before halftime.

With 18:16 left before the break, Grenninger took a feed from Nikki McElroy to make it a 3-0 advantage.

"(Grenninger's) an excellent player," said Redbank coach Dave Cherby.

About the best chance the Bulldogs had to score came early in the second half when freshman forward Lacey Blose, who was just a few yards in front of the net, shot the ball wide.

Scott made it 4-0 with 22:34 remaining off a textbook crossing pass from Grenninger.

The final goal of the evening came when Grenninger took a shot towards the net that Toth misplayed. The soft shot hit Toth's hands, then slowly trickled behind her into the net.

The Gremlins defeated the Bulldogs 4-0 and 2-1 during Keystone Shortway Conference action.

"We played the same game we always try to play," said Cherby. "We have a system and the next time we play them, we'll stay with it."

The Gremlins will be gunning for their seventh consecutive District 9 title Thursday. They already have faced Brookville once this season, winning 4-3.

"We can move all our players around," said Meshanko. "The chemistry is back and we're clicking on all cylinders right now.

"I told the kids you don't get pretty points. The ball just has to go into the net," he added.

Notes:

Gremlins goalie Keirsten Foreback made two saves while Toth made nine. … Grenninger now has 52 goals and 31 assists this season. … The majority of the second half was played in a driving rainstorm after a light rain fell during the first half.
