Warriors crush East Forest
CHERRY TWP - After a loss to Keystone on Tuesday, Moniteau softball coach Danny Hindman had an idea.
New season, fresh start.
On Thursday against East Forest, the Warriors rapped out 14 hits and didn't commit an error to power their way to a 13-0 five-inning victory.
That was a far cry from Tuesday, when Moniteau gave up 11 runs on just three singles, but seven errors and 14 walks by Sara Vinca helped the Panthers' cause.
That seemed a long time ago as the Warriors played nearly flawless softball against the Bears.
"After the Keystone game the other night, we tried to regroup," said Hindman. "This game is what the team expected.
"We said it was the first night of a new season. We came out a lot more focused. That showed all the way through practice and in this game," he added.
The Warriors (8-2) wasted little time in setting the tone of the game, ringing up eight runs and eight hits in the first inning.
A two-run triple opened the scoring, which was capped by a three-run triple by Kelly McMillen. Vinca, Laken Burk and Martina Burk each added an RBI single.
The Warriors added a pair of runs in the second inning, highlighted by another Laken Burk run-scoring single, for a 10-0 lead.
Four errors on the first four plays helped the Warriors build a 13-0 advantage in the third inning with Brandy Neff's fielder's choice ground out accounting for the third run of the inning.
Meanwhile, Vinca didn't a hit until pinch-hitter Elizabeth Fabiano had a one-out double down the right field line in the fourth inning, which put runners at second and third.
But Vinca struck out Sarah Harp and pinch-hitter Sabrina Armstrong to end the inning.
East Forest had one last opportunity to score in the fifth when, with two outs, Kala Paulsen doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. Courtney Lambert walked, but Erin Foley struck out to end the game.
Vinca finished the game with 10 strikeouts and five walks, allowing just the two doubles.
"I was thinking of putting another pitcher in late in the game, but we needed to get (Vinca) zoned in," said Hindman. "After the Keystone game, we broke it down and told her 'You're the pitcher. It starts with you. Everything else, fielding, hitting, is secondary."
The Warriors also enjoyed a balanced hitting attack as every starter had at least one hit or RBI.
