SV gets even with North Allegheny in 2-1 decision

JACKSON TWP - Back on April 13, the North Allegheny softball team tallied 10 runs on 12 hits in a 10-4 win over Seneca Valley.

The Raiders felt they had a score to settle and on Saturday, their message was heard loud and clear.

Seneca Valley's pitching duo of Megan Wise and Courtney Grootegoed surrendered just one run on six hits in a 2-1 victory on Senior Recognition Day at Raider Field.

It was the Tigers' first Section 3-AAAA loss of the season, snapping the team's 10-game unbeaten streak.

"The score of the first game was a bit misleading," said NA coach Rick Meister. "Seneca Valley is a playoff team and they deserved to win today."

It is true that the Raiders had already locked up a postseason berth, but Seneca Valley was by no means taking the game lightly.

"With the way the last game went, the girls wanted to come out and show they can play with NA," said Raiders' coach George Trew. "And I think we proved that today. This was a big win for us."

Wise started the game and held the Tigers' bats in check for the first five innings, with NA's lone tally coming on catcher Samantha Goettman's solo home run in the top of the second.

Grootegoed worked the final two innings, retiring all six of the batters she faced for the save.

Seneca Valley broke the ice with a run in the bottom of the first inning when Tina Mangola's single to left drove home Julie Marlowe.

Following Goettman's round-tripper, which cleared the scoreboard just beyond the center field fence to tie the game at one, the Raiders grabbed the lead right back.

Nicole Lollo led off the bottom of the second with a single, moving to second base on a wild pitch and to third base on Wise's bunt single.

Marlowe followed by popping out, after which the Tigers (13-3-1, 8-1) attempted to double up Wise off of first base. The throw was mishandled, allowing Lollo to break for the plate with what proved to be the winning run.

The rest of the contest was a pitcher's dual, with neither team collecting more than one hit in any inning from the third through the seventh.

"Between Wise, Grootegoed and (Lauren) Pennell, we feel we have three pitchers who can go out and get the job done," said Trew. "We're fortunate we can say that because not too many teams can."

North Allegheny's Aimee Dassner also turned in a solid performance inside the circle, despite shouldering the defeat.

After a rocky start to the game - allowing six batters to reach base in the first two innings - Dassner settled down and gave up just three hits in the final four frames. She struck out two and walked three.

"To give up just two runs to any team, especially one that can hit the ball like (Seneca Valley), I couldn't ask for more," said Meister.

Unlike the first meeting between the teams when the Raiders (13-4, 6-3) committed four errors, SV's defense in Saturday's win was flawless.

Seneca Valley's two seniors, Wise and Jamie Guffey, were honored prior to the game.
