Quick work
CHERRY TWP - The Karns City softball team has had two faces this season: those of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Gremlins coach Mike Simpson certainly wasn't pleased with the one that showed up at Moniteau Tuesday, when he watched his squad commit four errors and collect just three hits in an 11-1, five-inning loss to the Warriors.
"We just didn't play well at all today," Simpson said. "I don't know what was on the girls' minds - it certainly wasn't softball."
The Warriors wasted no time taking control of the contest, scoring three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning.
Adding six more runs in the second frame and two in the fourth, Moniteau was able to proceed with its post-game senior recognition festivities earlier than expected because of the shortened game.
Senior second baseman Natalie DeMatteis led Moniteau's offense with three hits, including a first-inning home run, along with three RBI and three runs scored.
All nine of the Warriors' starters either scored or drove in at least one run.
"Our offense has been balanced like that all season long," said Moniteau coach Danny Hindman. "Every part of our lineup has contributed at one point or another. That's what it takes to be a good team."
Sara Vinca picked up the win for Moniteau after striking out seven and walking seven.
The only run Karns City recorded, scored by Jocelyn Bishop in the top of the fourth inning, was unearned.
Roslyn Ferraro was the losing pitcher. She walked two and didn't strike out a batter.
Following Vinca's single that brought home Beatty with the game's first run, DeMatteis launched a ball over right-fielder Ashley Fuhrer's head that went for an inside-the-park home run.
With the Warriors (13-3) ahead 9-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, pinch-hitter Ellie Hilliard's ground out scored DeMatteis, followed by Laken Burk's steal of home with the final run.
The loss gives the Gremlins a current overall record of 7-9.
With a school rule stating that a team must be .500 or better to make the playoffs, Karns City must win its final two games against A-C Valley and Clarion-Limestone to reach the postseason.
Moniteau seniors honored following Tuesday's action were Jenna Beatty, Laken Burk, Natalie DeMatteis and Kelley McMillen.
