WEXFORD — Butler wrestling coach Scott Stoner was looking for a level playing field.

As it turned out, the Golden Tornado faced an uphill climb in their match at North Allegheny Wednesday.

After being awarded a forfeit victory in the 152-pound weight class due to an ineligible wrestler to take a 21-20 lead, the Tornado lost the final four matches to fall 39-21 to the Tigers in a battle of section unbeatens.

The Tigers (9-1, 5-0) had just used a 5-2 decision by Dave Cawley over Ken Rosenbauer in the 145-pound class to take a 20-15 lead before Butler (14-1, 5-1) regained the lead in an unconventional way.

Just six seconds into the 152 bout between Alex Evanoff and Brett Landefeld, Stoner approached the scorer's table for a 15-minute discussion with the official and Tigers coach Jamie Kryiazis.

The verdict? Landefeld was unable to wrestle at that weight class since his weight from last weekend's tournament at Trinity High School was used at the weigh-in.

His weight of 153.9 pounds meant he was unable to wrestle at the lower weight, but could have wrestled at 160.

""I have to exist and coach under the same conditions," said Stoner. "His 152.58 is his optimal performance (weight). He was eligible at 160. They said it was a typo error.

"They punched in that weight (for Wednesday). The coaches were present, the official for 153.9. I'm assuming it's correct because (Kryiazis) and I and the official signed off on it.

"I'm sure that left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. People can think about what they want, but I'm following the rules," Stoner added.

"(Landefeld) weighed in at 152 at Trinity and it was inputted wrong," said Kryiazis. "When you input the results, you also put in what they weighed in as. ... It was typed in wrong. You almost always automatically click on (the previous match weight).

"It was an input error. ... There are always some glitches and I'm sure that will be looked at to change. You probably don't look at the weights. Some look at the book, and I'm sure Scott saw that,"Kryiazis added.

In the end, it was much ado about nothing.The one-point lead quickly dissolved as Butler's Josh Pascazi wrestled at 160 instead of 152 and lost to the Tigers' Seb Fischer 8-4. Fischer scored five points in the third period to erase a 4-3 deficit.NA's Karl DeCiantis (171) then pinned Derek Hays, Max Fischer (189) scored a 12-2 major decision over Butler's Chris White and the Tigers' Kameron Palagi (215) pinned Alex Miranda in 3:26 to close out the match."We beat Bethel Park by our lowest point total (for a recent win) because we didn't give up pins," said Stoner. "If you start giving up six points here and there against NA, you don't give yourself a chance."Kryiazis was pleased with his team's effort, especially after falling behind 12-0 after three matches.The damage could have been worse as Butler's Mark Moses (285) and Eric Tuck (103) opened their matches by jumping out to 5-0 first-period leads.Both were close to pins early in the period, but their Tigers counterparts, Mark Pegher and Kevin Mopner, respectively, rebounded. Both NA wrestlers lost 5-3 decisions, then the Tornado's Damon Redenbach won by forfeit at 112."Hindsight's the key," said Kryiazis. "We had some guys thrown on their backs and it wasn't at the end of a period. It was for a long time."I thought our kids showed us a lot tonight. We have some inexperienced wrestlers and they came through," Kryiazis added.<B>Notes:</B> Jon Sanko (140) won a 4-1 decision over Rick Peluso at 140 to account for Butler's other remaining victory. ...
