Eric Stanley of Seneca Valley looks to the clock for help as Butler's Mike Scialabba gets a firm grip on him during their 171-pound bout Wednesday. Scialabba took a 14-1 decision to help the Golden Tornado to a 33-23 victory that put them in the section championship.

JACKSON TWP— Two narrow decisions scored two radically different ways helped produce a critical victory for the Butler wrestling team Wednesday night.

The Golden Tornado (8-2) defeated Seneca Valley, 33-23, to secure a berth in the section championship quadrangular Jan. 21 at Fox Chapel.

Butler clinched the victory with two individual matches to spare. The host Raiders (2-3) trailed only 18-16 before the Tornado's Zach Reges scored a pin at 119 pounds, Eric Tuck notched a 1-0 decision at 125 and Cody Hartman pinned his foe at 130 to wrap up the win.

The dual meet started with the 145-pound match.

Tuck (11-7) scored an escape on Seneca Valley's Grant Evans (8-6) in the second period for the lone point in their match.

"Eric's still adjusting to being a 125-pound wrestler after being at 103 last year,"Butler coach Scott Stoner said. "I'd still like to see him get a little more aggressive.

"Butler has an outstanding team and this was a big test for us."While Tuck won a low-scoring narrow decision, Butler's Marino Quercio won a high-scoring one at 215 pounds."That 215-pound match was a crazy one,"Tomeo said.Quercio (15-4) trailed Jordan Williams (9-6) 13-8 after two periods before pulling close with a number of quick third-period takedowns. Quercio tied the match at 17 by being awarded a stalling point with 11 seconds left in regulation.Quercio won the match 19-17 with a takedown in overtime."I couldn't believe that match,"Stoner said. "(Quercio) was all over the place, but he got it done in the end."Reges' (8-8) pin of Schettler was his fourth fall of the season."Zach is such a quiet kid that it's hard for me to get a read on him,"Stoner said. "I can't even tell if he likes wrestling sometimes, but he's coming on strong and he's been getting some pins for us lately."Hartman improved to 12-6 with his pin at 130 pounds for the Tornado. Cole Baxter moved to 16-0 with a technical fall over Bart Lalonde (2-1) at 145. Lalonde has been injured much of the year.Dakoda Collins at 152, Derek Hays at 160 and Mike Scialabba at 171 all scored decisions for Butler.Seneca Valley got a pin from heavyweight David Bonetti (9-2). The Raiders won the last two matches of the night in showdowns of WPIAL-ranked wrestlers.Dan Papst (13-2) decisioned Dillon Weston (8-3) at 135 pounds and Nathan Cully (12-4) posted a solid 9-1 decision over Mike Crawford (14-3) at 140.Tomeo was impressed with Jake Perri's 14-9 decision at 103 pounds."Jake was tentative early in the year, but now he's really coming on,"the Raiders coach said.Butler will face either North Allegheny or North Hills in the first round of the championship quad while Fox Chapel takes on the other.
