Mars notches section crown

Sam Swiatek hit a pinch-hit grand slam as part of an 11-run sixth inning for the Mars baseball team in a 17-2 win over East Allegheny Thursday afternoon.

The game was played at Mars' home field, but East Allegheny was the home team.

The win clinched the Section 4-AAA championship for the Planets (15-4, 12-2).

Swiatek's grand slam was the first for Mars since C.J. Weigand connected for one May 9 of last year against Highlands.

The 11-run sixth was the most scored in an inning since 2002 when the Planets put up 11 runs in the third inning against Freeport. The team record is 15 runs in an inning set in 1995 against Springdale.

Elsewhere:

• Ethan Williams had a pair of hits and an RBI and also picked up the win on the mound as Karns City routed Redbank Valley 14-0 in five innings.

Ben Sinz, Tyler Kepple and Wyatt Everetts each drove in two runs for the Gremlins (11-2).

Mike Hardross scored five goals as Seneca Valley downed Butler 15-5.Derek Finney added three goals and Brendan Thomas chipped in two for the Raiders (14-1).Cody Bachman scored two goals to pace Butler (10-6).

Olivia Kappler and Bailey Kraus each scored three goals as Butler pulled out a 10-9 win over Vincentian to force a play-in game against Blackhawk next week.The Golden Tornado (10-8) will play Blackhawk Wednesday at a site and time to be determined.
