SR falls in tournament final
The Slippery Rock High volleyball team knocked off the top-ranked Class A team in Pennsylvania, but fell in the championship match of the Clarion tournament Saturday.
The Rockets rallied to beat host Clarion, who entered the weekend undefeated and No. 1 in the state, 14-25, 25-21, 15-12 before losing to Richland in the final 21-25, 27-25, 13-15.
Carly Shearer had 31 kills and 41 service points in the tournament. Laura Hilliard added 44 kills and nine aces and Taylor Stamm 126 assists, 11 blocks and 14 kills for Slippery Rock.
Heather Urbaniak also had a big afternoon for the Rockets with 37 kills.
Boys Soccer
Matt White scored a goal for Mars, but Knoch received a goal from Ben Andrews on an assist from Ben Lope to force a 1-1 tie between the two teams Saturday.
Andy Fritz had four saves in goal for Knoch (3-6-1, 3-1-1).
It was the first blemish this season for unbeaten Mars (10-0-1, 5-0-1).
Karns City 3, Slippery Rock 0 — The Gremlins improved to 6-1 with a blanking of the Rockets (2-5-1).
Seneca Valley 2, Butler 0 — The Raiders (7-2, 4-2) blanked the Golden Tornado (3-5-2, 1-4-1) on Saturday. Further information was not available.
Football
Robert Burton rushed for 60 yards, but the Summit Academy football team was held scoreless in a 28-0 home loss to Kittanning Saturday afternoon.
Kittanning quarterback Kevin Barnes tossed a pair of touchdown passes and also rushed for a score for the Wildcats (2-2).
His 17-yard connection with Mitch Perhalla early in the first quarter gave Kittanning a 7-0 lead.
Barnes' 20-yard run in the second quarter extended Kittanning's advantage and his 24-yard pass to Logan Slagle capped the scoring.
Kol Lazeroff also scored on a 25-yard run for Kittanning.
Summit Academy's offense sputtered all game.
The Knights were held to a mere 101 yards of offense and no passing yards.
Quarterback Christopher Harp didn't complete a pass in 10 attempts.
