Banged up Rockets needed 42 points, 468 yards rushing to get past region foe Warren, 42-35
SLIPPERY ROCK — Trent Porter rushed for 256 yards and five touchdowns.
The Slippery Rock High football team needed every yard and every score.
Porter turned in his second-consecutive monster game, this one powering the Rockets to a wild 42-35 win over visiting Warren Friday night.
And like any good back would, Porter deflected his success onto others.
“I can’t take all the credit,” Porter said. “This is all on the line. They were fantastic today. I wouldn’t have been able to gain all those yards without them.”
Slippery Rock (4-2, 3-2) was shorthanded against Warren (1-5, 1-4) with five starters out on defense and quarterback Bailey Mertens also sidelined.
“We had people playing positions they normally don’t play and we did a good enough job to win the game,” said Slippery Rock coach Travis Sarver. “I’m proud of that.”
Porter was able to pick up the slack with touchdown runs of 41, 56 and 5 yards in the first half and of 19 and 23 in the second half, the final one giving Slippery Rock a 42-28 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
Ryan Lauster, who played his second straight game at quarterback, rushed for 169 yards and a touchdown as the Rockets rolled up 468 yards on the ground in the win.
“We have a lot of confidence in Trent,” Sarver said. “Ryan always makes the correct read. When the defense comes down on Trent, Ryan pulls it down. You can always count on those two.”
Warren has its best offensive game of the season since a 39-33 win over Titusville.
The Dragons came into the game averaging just 3.1 yards per carry, but busted out for 209 yards on 37 carries.
Fullback Solomon Gross had a big game. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound back gained 111 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown and also caught three passes for 52 yards and a score.
Warren quarterback Evan Suppa threw for 196 yards and three touchdowns and also scored on a 73-yard run.
He finished with 95 yards rushing. That number was cut into by five Slippery Rock sacks.
“We’ll have to work on that,” Porter said of the defense. “We just have to get better ever week and keep moving forward.”
Sarver echoed that statement.
“We have some good senior leadership,” Sarver said. “They’ve grown up a in that aspect. Still need to grow up a little more, but we’re resilient. We just have to get healthy.”
Defensive ends Cody Lawniczak and Shane Slater played well on defense for the Rockets.
But tackling was an issue for the Rockets, who missed a slew of them throughout the game.
“We were able to put a little pressure on their quarterback,” Sarver said. “Our defensive ends did a great job.”
Slippery Rock will play General McLane in Edinboro next week in a non-region game.
Sarver said the Rockets may use that week to improve their health.
“But you don’t want to get rusty, either,” Sarver said.
Porter said no matter who is on the field, he has confidence in them.
“We have guys stepping up and doing awesome,” Porter said. “Ryan at quarterback has done a great job. We’re doing just fine.”
