Karns City girls roll past Redbank
KARNS CITY — You can't score if you don't have the ball.
It sounds simple enough and it became painfully obvious for Redbank Valley in its KSAC South girls basketball game at Karns City Wednesday night.
Twenty turnovers in the first half alone allowed the Bulldogs to attempt just 13 field goals in the first two quarters of a 74-41 loss to the Gremlins.
“When we moved our feet (on defense), we were in good shape,” said KC coach Dave Kerschbaumer. “It's when we didn't move our feet, that's when we got in foul trouble. You stop the action and allow them to walk to the free throw line. But for the most part, we did what we wanted to do.”
Redbank Valley's offensive flow was reduced to a trickle early on. Ten of the team's 20 points in the first half came on free throws.
“My girls got frustrated and when that happens, they play sloppy,” said Redbank Valley coach Amy Twigg.
LeeAnn Gibson scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds for KC (15-3, 6-1) and Shanel Preston dropped 13 points. But on this night, it was freshman guard Emily Hegedus who led the way with 21 points, including 16 in the first half.
“She's our sixth man and has been a spark all year for us,” said Kerschbaumer. “She scored five points right before halftime to give us a (37-20) lead.”
Junior guard Brooke Hinderliter led the Bulldogs with 21 points, though eight of them came in the fourth quarter when the game was out of hand. The Gremlins held a 57-29 lead entering the final period.
“She's one of the best players in the league,” Kerschbaumer said of Hinderliter. “She can do a lot of things that other players can't do. Defensively, she is a lot better than people think.”
But if the Bulldogs (14-5, 4-4) are to make a run in the upcoming District 9 Class AA playoffs, Twigg knows other players need to improve their game. In two losses to the Gremlins this season, Hinderliter has scored 42 of her team's 80 points.
“The other girls need to step up,” Twigg said. “They need to have more confidence and not always rely on Brooke to make things happen.
“We have a lot of things we need to improve on.”
