Freeport has chicken pox case

BUFFALO TWP — The Freeport School District has reported a case of chicken pox at the high school, only a day after a confirmed case of MRSA at the high school.

Superintendent Ian Magness said a letter was sent home to parents about the case of the chicken pox on Thursday afternoon.

“We were made aware of a case of chicken pox in our high school,” Magness said. “We cannot confirm the school was the source. We cannot confirm that this person is even contagious at this point, but we fully believe that a good thing happened here today. If we hadn't heightened the awareness of everybody today about potential MRSA, we don't believe that we would have been informed of this case (of chicken pox).”

Although Magness admits that chicken pox is more common and often less fear-inducing than MRSA, he said some people in the district may not have been vaccinated or may have compromised immune systems, making them more susceptible.

Magness said the district has staff working overtime this week to further disinfect the school. The school remains open as well.
