SV girls reach WPIAL soccer finals, 1-0
Freshman Lexus Lambert scored the only goal of the match with 10 minutes remaining in the second half as the Seneca Valley girls soccer team punched its ticket to the WPIAL Class AAA final with a 1-0 win over Bethel Park at Chartiers Valley High School Wednesday night.
The Raiders (20-1) were dominant again on defense, allowing just two shots on goal the entire night.
“They have played well all year long,” said Seneca Valley girls soccer coach Dave Sylvester.
Seneca Valley, which has now won 20 consecutive matches, will face Peters Township (19-1) in the WPIAL championship match Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
“We have a history with them,” said Sylvester, whose team beat Peters Township for the WPIAL title in 2009. “We've fared pretty well against them. They are the No. 1 seed and no WPIAL team has beaten them. We're going to go in as underdogs and throw the kitchen sink at them.”
Slippery Rock 3, Harbor Creek 2 (double OT) — Freshman Marissa Siebka scored the tying goal with three minutes remaining in regulation on a free kick and then put in the game-winner midway through the second overtime to give the Rockets a stunning win in the first round of the District 10 Class AA playoffs at General McLane High School.
“Big time,” said Slippery Rock coach Les Smith when talking about the upset. “We were talking earlier in the season about how we probably shouldn't even be here. Now, we're moving on.”
Siebka started the season as the Slippery Rock sweeper before moving up to the midfield and forward.
“That move has certainly paid off,” Smith said.
Slippery Rock (12-6-1) hasn't lost in seven straight matches since a defeat to Grove City, which lost 6-0 to Mercyhurst Prep Wednesday in its first-round playoff contest.
