Warriors survive scare
BROOKVILLE — The Moniteau football team stopped a two-point conversion with 2 minutes remaining to steal a 7-6 win over Brookville on the road in a KSAC Large School game.
Brookville (1-6, 0-4) had plenty of opportunities to score due to Moniteau penalties and turnovers, but the Warriors’ defense forced four turnovers on downs in five of the Raiders’ red-zone situations.
Brookville also recovered a late onside kick and drove the ball to the Moniteau 10-yard line with 38 seconds remaining.
A 23-yard kick from the Raiders that would have given them the lead with 38 seconds remaining fells short.
Moniteau coach Wade Vogan said he felt good about his defense’s performance and ability to keep them in the game, when soggy weather conditions hindered their offense.
“(The field) was swarming with white jerseys,” Moniteau coach Wade Vogan said. “We really couldn’t do anything fancy tonight with the weather like that.”
The Warriors (3-4, 1-3) kept the Raiders in check throughout the first half, allowing only 30 yards, all rushing, and forced a fumble. Moniteau continued the trend into the third quarter, but the Raiders began to rally in the fourth quarter.
Brookville running back Brandon McGanor scored a touchdown on a 3-yard run with two minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the coaching staff failed while opting to attempt a rushing two-point conversion.
Brookville coach Scott Park said he attempted the conversion because his team’s drive gave them some momentum.
“In hindsight, maybe we should have kicked the extra point,” Park said. “We definitely had our opportunities. If it’s in our grasp, we gotta go for it.”
Derek Boben scored Moniteau’s winning touchdown in the second quarter on a 24-yard run with 1:23 remaining. Boben saw the majority of carries for the Warriors recording 115 yards on 21 carries. Fullback Shonn Kline also contributed on the ground with 48 yards on 16 carries.
Vogan said he wasn’t concerned with the lack of passing. He said he didn’t expect to pass the ball, keeping the weather in mind.
Vogan said the Warriors had plenty of miscues of their own, including three lost fumbles and eight penalties for 55 yards.
