Daunting task for Tornado
PITTSBURGH — Central Catholic football coach Terry Totten can do the math.
He just doesn’t care to.
If the Vikings (7-1, 5-1) defeat Butler (1-7, 1-5) by 10 points or more in the regular season finale Friday night, Central will win the Northern Eight Conference.
“I don’t worry about point differentials or tiebreaker stuff,” Totten said. “All I’m concerned with is winning the football game.”
Central Catholic has won plenty of them lately. The Vikings have won 33 of their 37 games since the start of the 2013 season. They advanced to the PIAA title game that year and the WPIAL championship contest last season.
Butler, on the other hand, has won only four of its 26 games in the past three seasons. Included inthat stretch are 55-0 and 55-14 losses to Central.
“Our preparation doesn’t change based on who we’re playing,” Golden Tornado coach Rob Densmore said. “Whether it’s Pine-Richland, Central, Shaler or Fox Chapel, we prepare the same.
“We want to put our kids in the best position we can to be successful.”
In facing Central at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Carnegie Mellon University, Butler will be prepping for a lineup that has eight or more Division I collegiate prospects.
Running back Ronnie Jones (624 yards, 9 TDs) is headed to Toledo. Bricen Garner, a wide receiver-safety, and defensive lineman Rashad Wheeler are going to Pitt. Linebacker David Adams is considered one of the best at his position in the state.
The list goes on and on.
“You don’t have Division I athletes without those kids being really athletic,” Densmore said. “They’ve got great speed and they’re well-coached.
“We need to play aggressively against a team like this, try to get them to make mistakes so we can get some turnovers defensively. Offensively, we have to try to drive the ball.”
Central quarterback Troy Fisher thew for 195 yards in last week’s 35-28 win over previously unbeaten Pine-Richland. He scored the deciding points on a 16-yard run in the final seconds.
Fisher has thrown for 817 yards and 11 touchdowns this year. He has tossed 97 passes and has yet to throw an interception. The Vikings are averaging 47 points over their last five games.
“We were a little slow coming out of the gate this year and that was my fault,” Totten said. “We’ve been playing much better football lately.”
Lucas Dubyak and Tim Vernick have Butler’s only two interceptions this season. Darrien Pickett leads the Tornado defensively with 42 solo tackles.
Offensively, sophomores Brandon Fleeger and Luke Michalek will continue to see time at quarterback for the Tornado. Fleeger threw for 110 yards last week while Michalek rushed for more than 200 the week before.
“The success those two have experienced shows their potential,” Densmore said. “Because of their limited varsity time, they aren’t entirely familiar with everything this offense can do. But both will only get better moving forward.”
Damien Pickett has 821 all-purpose yards for Butler, including 593 and six touchdowns rushing. Senior receiver Kelley Kuharic is coming off the best game of his career. He has 13 catches for 217 yards and four touchdowns on the year.
“(Sophomore 260-pound) Jake Kradel had a nice game for us at offensive tackle last week,” Densmore said. “He’s been doing a nice job all year.”
Totten feels that way about the Butler coaches.
“They are showing big improvement as a team,” Totten said. “Butler is playing physical, downhill football. Their tailback is a tough runner.
“The physicality they’re showing is very positive for their program.”
