Knoch struggles to score, drops season finale

KITTANNING — Friday night summed up the Knoch Knights' season in two words: missed opportunities.

The Knights struggled to finish drives and fell to Armstrong 41-15 in their season finale, finishing with an overall record of 3-6 and 2-6 in Greater Allegheny Conference play.

“We had to come and bring our A-game. You saw some flashes of what it takes to be a good football team,” Knoch coach Mike King said. “But when you're talking about flashes, you probably came out on the losing side.”

The Knights had opportunities to score throughout the first half.

Late in the first quarter, Knoch's defense pinned the River hawks back to the latter's 7-yard line. On the ensuing punt, the Knights returned the ball to the Armstrong 37.

However, after Knoch sophomore quarterback Jake Herrit was sacked for a loss of 10 yards and the offense not being able to gain ground, the Knights were forced to punt.

In the second quarter after starting near midfield, Herrit found senior tight end Brennan McTighe for a 44-yard pass to the River Hawks' 2-yard line.

A false start penalty prevented Knoch from rushing into the end zone. The Knights went for it on fourth down, but didn't score.

“There's got to be some lessons learned by our underclassmen,” King said.

While the Knights' defense had flashes of hope, Armstrong's Zane Dudek proved to be more than Knoch could handle.

Dudek opened the game with a 45-yard touchdown run to put the Riverhawks up 7-0.

In the fourth quarter, he outdid himself with a 75-yard scoring run.

Dudek broke the 2,000-yard mark on the season, rushing 25 times for 251 yards to go with the pair of touchdowns. He needed 245 yards to break the mark.

Dudek played with a broken thumb for the past two weeks. Team doctors were able to create a cast that allowed him to play safely for the season's final two games.

“That was a shot of adrenaline for the team,” said Riverhawks coach Frank Fabian about Dudek being able to play. “I couldn't be happier for him. There's big things ahead for him.”

Armstrong junior quarterback Michael Lhote also had a stellar night, completing 10 out of 14 passes for 144 yards and four touchdowns. Knoch didn't go down without a fight.

With six minutes remaining, junior Mac Christy dashed down the middle of the field for 71 yards and the Knights' first touchdown of the night.

On the next Knoch drive with just over two minutes remaining, senior Ben Lowery took a pitch from Christy 35-yards for a score on a hook-and-lateral.

Christy ran for a team-high 85 yards and Lowery added 63 yards.
