Slippery Rock swimmers reach PIAA
Slippery Rock High swimmers Brandon Bridges, Zach France and Abigail Parsons all earned an automatic berth to the state championship meet by placing second in their respective events at the District 10 Class AA meet, held at Penn State-Behrend Friday and Saturday.
Bridges (200 individual medley) and France (500 freestyle), both seniors, managed times of 2:03.14 and 5:06.59, respectively, in boys action.
Parsons extended her freshman season with an effort of 1:00.75 in the girls 100 butterfly. Also swimming that exact time was Grove City junior Meghan Terwilliger, who will also compete at states.
Grove City’s boys 200 medley relay team of Eric Schmidt, Tom Somora, Jordan Caldwell and Austin Wilson placed second with a time of 1:40.52 to make the PIAA event.
WrestlingSlippery Rock senior Forrest Christmann lost in the heavyweight third-place consolation match at the Class AA Northwest Regional at Sharon High School on Saturday, missing out on a trip to the state tournament in the process.After receiving a first-round bye, Christmann pinned Redbank Valley’s Ben Carillo, sending the former to the semifinals, where he dropped a 2-1 decision to Lakeview’s Sam Breese.In the bout for third place, Christmann (31-5) lost another 2-1 decision, this time to Port Allegany’s Nick Budd.Slippery Rock’s Dave Huselton and Grove City’s Chet Simoni, Luke Walter and Trey Maher all fell in the quarterfinal round.In the WPIAL Class AAA tournament, no Seneca Valley, Butler, Mars or Knoch wrestler made it as far as the third-place consolation match.
HockeyMatt Tomasovic scored two goals and added two assists Friday night as Butler’s varsity hockey team closed the regular season with a 7-4 victory over Penn Trafford at Center Ice in Delmont.The Golden Tornado (10-11) will compete in the PIHL playoffs at 7:10 p.m. today against Canon McMillan at Southpointe.Tanner Gilliland and Nick Whann added a goal and two assists each for Butler in Friday’s win. Dylan Rice, Tanner Chuba and Jonathan Fair all scored goals.Clay Bachman was the winning goaltender.
