Kudos to spring athletes
Pound for pound, Jonathan Dorogy has to be the toughest dude around.
And the busiest.
The Seneca Valley senior is built like a fireplug. He's only 5-foot-8, but he's 170 pounds of pure muscle. He can catch the football, hit the baseball and out-run nearly anyone in the state over 100 meters of track.
There's multi-sport stars. Then there's Dorogy.
There is little doubt that Dorogy is the athlete of the spring sports season in Butler County.
Dorogy will compete in three events this weekend at the PIAA Track and Field Championships in Shippensburg. He has a chance to come home with medals in all three of those events: the 100, 200 and 400-meter relay.
Dorogy has a real shot at winning the state title in the 100.
Wednesday he will lead off and play center for Seneca Valley in the WPIAL Quad-A championship game. It could be the Raiders' third straight WPIAL title.
Not to shabby, Mr. Dorogy. Not too shabby.
Dorogy gets my vote for baseball and male track and field athlete of the year.
There were other individuals this spring who were exceptional. Here are some of my choices for player of the year in some other spring sports:
And the nominees are: Taylor Rotz, Mars; Emily Hiwiller, Moniteau; Codi Reed, Knoch; Chloe Eshenbaugh, Moniteau; Emily Lindsey, FreeportAnd the winner is: Hiwiller. This was a very difficult choice, but Hiwiller's combination of average, power and defense at the very challenging position of catcher put her over the top in my eyes.
And the nominees are: Will King, Mars; Blake Thompson, Mars; Tanner Kotch, Butler; J.J. Raab, Butler; Seth Horwat, Butler. And the winner is: Horwat.Another difficult choice, but I'm going to give some props to defense in lacrosse and Horwat was the most physically imposing and dominating defensive player around.
And the nominees are: Mandi Boldy, Knoch; Megan Crawford, Butler. And the winner is: Crawford.Crawford gets the nod because she scored about a billion goals this season.Female track and fieldAnd the nominees are: Lydia Dennis, Mars; Lauren Decker, Grove City; Emily Schumacher, Karns City. And the winner is: Dennis.Dennis has been competing in the long jump and triple jump most of the season with a stress fracture in her lower leg.Still, she has a shot at medals in both events at states.
And the nominees are: Matt Huey, Butler; Patrick Messmer, Seneca Valley. And the winner is: Huey.Any time Huey had a chance to put the ball on the floor with a swing of his arm, he usually did.Mike Kilroy is a staff writer for the Butler Eagle.
