Freeport tops Butler for tourney win

The Yellowjackets protected their home court Saturday by beating Butler 2-0 in the championship match of the Freeport Girls Volleyball Tournament.

Freeport senior Alexis Schrecengost was named tournament MVP.

The Yellowjackets dropped Franklin Regional in the semifinals, while the Golden Tornado ousted Ford City. Butler reached the final four with a victory over Leechburg in the quarterfinals and Freeport received a bye.

Girls SoccerIn a battle of unbeatens, Emily LoPresti scored with about a minute left in the first overtime to give Karns City a 2-1 victory over Hickory on Saturday.LoPresti also notched the regulation goal for the Gremlins (9-0), while Morgan Deal supplied seven saves. The Hornets drop to 6-1 on the year.Knoch 4, Indiana 0 — Gabi Lassinger recorded two goals and one assist in the Knights’ shutout win in Section 2-AA action on Friday.Olivia Sharbaugh factored into all four scores with one goal and three assists, while Marly Gordon also found the back of the net for the Knights (7-2, 5-1). The Indians did not record a shot on goal.Freeport 3, Deer Lakes 0 — Erica Jack scored two goals Saturday to lead the Yellowjackets to victory over Deer Lakes in a game shortened by poor weather conditions.Megan Manke scored the other goal for the Yellowjackets (5-4, 4-2). Deer Lakes managed only two shots on goal.

Boys SoccerKarns City downed St. Joseph by a 4-1 margin on Saturday behind two goals and two assists from Tyler Pollock.Noah Pollock and Spenser Myers also scored for the Gremlins, who improved to 5-1 on the season.Knoch 1, Mars 0 — Ben Andrews broke the scoreless tie for the Knights in a Section 2-AA tilt.Knoch improves to 6-2-3 overall and 4-1-1 in section play, while the shutout sets the Planets (7-2, 4-2) a half-game behind the Knights for second place.Freeport 1, Kittanning 0 — Mario Borino scored the lone goal in this Section 2-AA match for the Yellowjackets (4-6, 2-4).Mercer 4, Slippery Rock 3 — Mark Cessar recorded a goal and two assists, but the Rockets couldn’t hold on after leading 3-2 at halftime.Ben Magliocca had a goal and an assist, while Josh Jones also scored for Slippery Rock (5-3-1).

Private SchoolsThe First Baptist girls volleyball team recently downed Jefferson County 3-0 by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 25-19.Casey Hall led the squad with seven aces, seven kills and nine digs, Corrie Kennedy added 12 service points, Lyndsey Lowe had two blocks and Emily Rowland chipped in 12 assists.First Baptist boys soccer recently lost an 8-6 decision to Jefferson County.Adam Mueller recorded three goals and three assists, while Trevor Barnhart added two goals and one assist.
