Grove City girls stay unbeaten

The Grove City girls basketball team scored the fewest points it had all season Thursday night in Sharpsville.

When the Eagles faced a one-point deficit going into the fourth quarter, Grove City turned to its defense.

The Eagles limited Sharpsville to six points and eked out a 40-37 win to move to 4-0.

Corianne Hyduchak led the Eagles with a game-high 13 points. Jenn Ferguson added 10 points for Grove City.

Freeport 50, Knoch 28 — A strong opening quarter sparked the Yellowjackets to a big win in their Section 1-AAA opener at Knoch High School.

Freeport (2-2, 1-0) outscored the Knights 19-8 in the first quarter.

Zoe Soilis (15 points) and Macy Smolic (13) scored in double digits for Freeport.

Abbie Thrower and Carly Burdett led the Knights (0-4, 0-1) with six points. Burdett also added five steals, while Savanna Steffen had 10 rebounds.

Bonnie Workman, who made four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points, helped open things up for Mars (2-3, 1-0).

Ali Goetz (12 points) and Jess Bunner (11) also finished in double figures for the Planets.

Mars 8, Freeport 5 — The Planets weren't always in control, but they survived a furious second-period rally to beat the Yellowjackets at the Belmont Ice Complex.Freeport (1-3-2) scored four goals — including two from Cole Hepler — in the second period to take a 4-3 lead.That's when Mars' offense found its footing. The Planets (7-1) scored five goals in the final seven minutes to steal a win.Mars scored the first two goals of the period before Freeport's Stone Haberstroh tied the game at 5-5 with 6:05 remaining.Johnathan Kowalkowski then scored his second goal of the period — and the eventual game-winner — with 2:13 remaining on an assist from Ian Newman and Nicholas Makozy.The Yellowjackets outshot Mars 35-20. Newman, who had four assists, and Makozy, who had two goals and two assists, led the Planets with four points.Nick Rusak scored a goal and had two assists to lead the Yellowjackets.
